The name "Des Plaines" comes from French for "plain." This annexation removed some 2 miles (3 km) of wooded land from those communities and left them with only 8 blocks (2 km²) of land each that they could use for their own purposes or sell to others. On July 1st, 1969, the Village of Des Plaines became one community with a population of over 50,000 people when it merged with adjacent village versions Westchester (1909), Northfield (1912), East Harlem (1915), South Holland (1892), and Skokie Heights/West Side Road Township (1920). As part of this merger all villages had a total population above 25K residents which included west side road township which had its incorporation date as October 15th 1920 On January 1st 2000 the village limits were increased by annexing Evergreen Park/Uptown Chicago neighborhoods making it an additional 20K people living within its borders
