Des Plaines, Ill., is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. The name comes from an Ottawa word meaning "plain," as well as being one of only a few places in Illinois where sugar beets are grown. In 1865, the first train reached Des Plaines from Chicago; it was brought by horse-drawn wagonloads of goods that included hay to be sold in local stores. Over time, railroad travel became more popular and Des Plaines grew into a large community with its own post office (1896) and school district (1912). During World War II,[1] Des Plaines played an important role as a manufacturing center for munitions production throughout Cook County[2]. Many factories closed during the war but many others revived after the war thanks to wartime spending on infrastructure projects such as new roads and bridges.[3] After the war ended, des plaine's economy began to decline due to high levels of unemployment among veterans returning home. In recent years des plaine has seen some resurgence with investments by businesses in downtown areas including restaurants/bars/nightlife/theater/aspiring medical professionals etc.; however much remains undone such as improvements to city services including better sidewalks etc...
