The first settler in Des Plaines was Nicholas Brown who arrived in 1834. He named his land Prairie du Chien (Prairie of the Sioux). In 1839, John Prentice purchased 5 acres (2 hectares) northeast of present-day Des Plaines from Nicholas Brown for $1 per acre ($46 per hectare). Prentice built a log cabin and farmstead which became known as Prentice's Grove. In 1857, James Brouncker bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) east of present-day Des Plaines from Ephraim Usher for $5 per acre ($48 per hectare). Brouncker renamed his property Oswego Road and developed it into a village that would later become Des Plaines. By 1870, the population of Oswego Village had increased to 100 residents and it had two stores and one blacksmith shop. The first post office opened in Oswego Village on December 12, 1870. In 1875, Jethro Calkins donated 2 acres (0.8 hectares) northwest of present-day Des Plaines to the village for use as an agricultural park with 4 miles (6 km) of roads leading to it for private settlement by farmers and others interested in developing its potentialities as a center for agriculture or industry. This donation formed part of the University Park district that became part of downtown Chicago after City Council approval on October 15, 1886."
