Des Plaines, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 19,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Des Plaines" comes from English and means "plain of the plain." The village was founded in 1853 by John Fennelly and others as a result of the land grant given to him by President James K. Polk. In 1892 it became a town when all of Cook County was organized into townships. The first post office in Des Plaines opened on December 12, 1853, under the name of Prairie du Chien. At that time there were only three people living in Des Plaines: John Fennelly, his wife Lucy and their son George Washington Fennelly Jr.. Over time other residents were added including Nathan Bedford Forrest (a slave trader) who bought 1/4 acre (0.22 km2) lot on July 14, 1854 for $100 cash; Moses Brown (a farmer); Isaac Phillips (a blacksmith); and Benjamin Hoyle (an Independent man). On October 5th 1860 Abraham Lincoln delivered an address at Clear Lake Park which mentioned that "the Territory of Illinois had been organized", also adding that "In this new Territory there are nine villages or towns". On February 9th 1865 Abraham Lincoln was shot while sitting in his home with his family – one bullet passed through his body but did not enter any vital organs; he died later that day after being taken to a local hospital where he expired without having suffered any further injuries from that gunshot wound. The village grew rapidly, and by 1860 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1871, the Village of Des Plaines formed a city government with a mayor and nine-member City Council. By 1907, the city had an population of over 5,000 people. The city annexed part of neighboring West Side Chicago in 1912 and became an integrated community with its own police and fire departments.
