Des Plaines, Illinois is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 19,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The history of Des Plaines spans more than one hundred years and includes many significant events and people. The first permanent settler in what is now Des Plaines was Nicholas Conte in 1818. He and his family were among the earliest white settlers in what would become Des Plaines Township. In 1837, John Hanks bought land adjacent to the current town site from Nicholas Conte for $1 per acre ($9 per kilometer). From this purchase, Hanks named his new town "Des Plaines". In 1838, George Stephenson built a steamboat on the then-ripe Lake Michigan shoreline east of Chicago for transportation between Chicago and Rockford. This boat became known as the "Lake Shore Line Road Boat" or "George Stephenson's Boat". The first train ride across Lake Michigan occurred on November 11th, 1845 when a locomotive called the "Desplaines" left Chicagoland Depot with passengers for West Side Manhattan Terminal (now Grand Central Terminal). By 1870, Des Plaines had about 100 residents and six businesses including two banks. There were also three schools – one district school which opened in 1865 and served grades 1-6; one preparatory school which opened in 1870; and an agricultural school which opened in 1875 which taught farmers' methods of raising crops before they went into production on their own properties. After prohibition began throughout much of America during World War I (1914-1918), many business owners closed their stores due to high taxes that could only be paid by those who sold alcohol or cigarettes tax-free under state law! A few select businesses did not face such difficulties however as two drugstores managed by brothers Harry & Maurice Schwartz remain open until today! Despite Prohibition being repealed by President Woodrow Wilson following ratification of the 21st Amendment to the United States Constitution on December 6th 1920 (the Eighteenth Amendment), most businesses continued to operate under various names until well into post-war times...like #2 Bar & Grill from 1949 until 1981 when it was acquired by Marriott International Corporation; nor did any local grocery store go out of business after discontinuing its product lines during that time period! After World War II ended with military occupation by Japan (1945 - 1952), almost allianted German citizenship resulted in some restrictions placed upon citizens' access to certain areas like education so much so that even today there are dozens if not hundreds of restrictions that still apply despite efforts at deregulation over 50 years later! For example: restaurants must serve only Japanese customers through an interpreter instead of Americanized menus/signage; public restrooms must provide separate toilet facilities for men and women; parking spaces cannot have more than four cars parked side by side without special permission from city officials... these types of prohibitions continue up until present day because they are still considered legal tender laws under California law notwithstanding recent attempts at deregulation!!! In short: since 1945 nearly everything related to food service has remained essentially unchanged within DES PLAINES except perhaps increased regulation!!
