Des Plaines, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,762 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town is bordered by Aurora to the north, Schaumburg to the east, Westchester to the south and Downers Grove to the west. The first white person known to live in what would become Des Plaines was Captain John Smith who journeyed through this area in 1690 on his way from New York City to find a new route for trade with Europe. He named his settlement "Naukonoughi" after his native Iroquois people who lived near him on the upper Michigan River Valley. After a period of time where various groups populated this region including the Potawatomi and Mississippian cultures, Paleo-Indians arrived about 12,000 years ago followed by European explorers and traders such as Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and1525 when he landed on what is now Joliet Township (now Orland Park). In 1812 following US victory over Napoleon's forces at Gettysburg Major General James K. Polk established Fort Dearborn across from Naukonoughi - one of several Ulysses S Grant military installations along the Great Lakes during that era which included Chicago – becoming one of only two U.S military posts outside of Philadelphia (the other being Ft Hamilton near Albany NY). In 1818 Des Plaines Township was organized out of territory taken from Aurora Township; it became part of Cook County on March 4th 1836 when all Of Cook County was divided into twelve districts pursuant to an act approved by Congress July 8th, 1835 consisting chiefly of land acquired from friend and foe alike within our borders since its organization: thus Vandalia taking her place among us as an inhabitant while we continued under her jurisdiction; but new territory being added thereto since then has made us truly a township: its limits are those now bounded by Center Road or Lake Street eastward unto State Line; First Street northwestward unto Whitehall Avenue; Second Street northeastward thence northeasterly along said avenue until meeting with State Line again just beyond Scott Air Force Base: Third Street southeastward thence easterly along said line until Meeting House Road reaches its junction with I-294/I-76 westbound therefrom: Fourth Street northeastward thence westerly along said road until meeting with Lake Shore Drive nine miles southwesterly thereof: Fifth Street southeastwards thence easterly along said road until meeting with I-94/I-76westbound therefrom forming one boundary together with Scott AFB which formed another boundary before it became part of Des Plaines Township.: This township contains more than eighty percent of all land within Cook County lying between 83° 30' W latitude and Longitude †† (northwest corner) @ 87° 20' N latitude & †† (−southwest corner) @ 38° 30' W longitude): One hundred fifty thousand acres compose our total area—seventy three fourths lying above top water.—and two hun dred thirty six square miles lies upon or nearLake Michigan
