Des Plaines is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,564 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Des Plaines was organized on February 17, 1871 from parts of the towns of North Aurora and Wheeling to the south and east. At its incorporation it had a population of 486 people. The first postmaster general was John Wirtz; he served for two years. Other early leaders were James Grafton (1872-1875), who served as justice of the peace, and Samuel Morse (1873-1877). From 1881 to 1893 Des Plaines belonged to Porter Township. In 1893 it became part of Kane County and merged with other villages within it, including North Aurora, Wheeling and South Worthville.[1] The village's first store opened in 1865 on West Washington Street under proprietor Averill Howland. By 1900 there were 10 stores in the village with a population of 2,000 people. Grain elevator construction began in 1903 by developer George Fenton and continued until 1913 when production stopped due to World War I shortages. The Village Hall was built in 1909 by architects Davenport & Emery with $2,500 donated by Jethro Gibbs.[2] In 1915 Des Plaines had a population of 536 and annexed South Worthville which had a population of 1,000 residents before annexation. Post office service continued through annexation but discontinued after 1919 because mail could be delivered more easily through Rockford than through Des Plaines[3]. Immigrant businesses started up soon after annexation such as Chinese laundry entrepreneurs Wong Kwan Chanan and his son Sun Yat Sin who operated Wong's Laundry from 1924 until their death in 1990[4]. In 1957 an elementary school building was erected on East Randolph Street while another elementary school building (built 1916) stood vacant at 9th/10th Streets north of Roosevelt Road until demolished around 2006[5][6][7]. Park District No. 1 acquired both buildings for use as community centers beginning in 1962[8][9]. On October 6th 1966 new streets were Avenue M (now Northwest Highway), Bloomfield Avenue NE (now Northwest Boulevard), Broadway Avenue NW (now Winthrop Avenue) were created when extensions from Bloomingdale Boulevard intersection westward were widened to four lanes between avenue M/Bloomingdale Boulevard crossings)[10], creating one large arterial street running through central Des Plaines since that date[] . On December 12th 1969 all five blocks east side from Prospect Road south along DeKalb Ave including three block stretch between Prospect Rd./Wabash Ave./Oakwood Rd., then along Garfield Heights line remained unincorporated areas serving only themselves with no services available theretoandafter constituting part thereof as well having no property rights therein
