In 1825, American physician Dr. Richard Tilton donated 10 pairs of binoculars to Des Plaines Elementary School as part of their curriculum. Binoculars became an important tool for farmers and hunters during the early 19th century because they allowed them to see more detail than ever before on plants, animals, and landmarks. By 1870,binoculars had become so popular that they were being sold at retail stores across America! Des Plaines is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name means "plain" or "hills" in French. The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders and missionaries who traveled through what is now Des Plaines on their way to trade with Native Americans. On July 12, 1795, General George Washington's army passed through Des Plaines on its way from Mount Prospect to Cairo, Illinois; during this time it was known as "the Great White Way." In 1814 the village of Prairie du Chien was organized as a township and became one of the twelve townships in Cook County. In 1835 Prairie du Chien was annexed by Des Plaines; however, it reverted back to its township form in 1845 when it again became part of Cook County. In 1861 Leland Stanford founded Stanford University in Palo Alto, California; he donated land for the school which then became known as Stanford University Park (now Palo Alto). In 1865 John Wesley Harding established Harding College in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois and gave land for the college which also became known as Harding University Park (now Urbana-Champaign Campus). On November 3rd 1888 local resident Alfred Kapp wrote an article about his experiences living near Willingboro Township and South Monmouth Township because he thought they may be interested in buying some land together that he had been exploring for years. Eventually all three townships came together and formed Des Plaines Township on February 10th 1889 which later changed its name to plaindes plains after Edwin Edwards Sr., Mayor of Chicago who championed the idea for incorporation and helped get it done

The population of Des Plaines reached 5,000 people in 1870. In 1954, Des Plaines was renamed to honor General George Armstrong Custer who died during World War I. The town has a rich history that goes back to when it was first settled. The first residents of the town were farmers who grew corn, wheat, and other crops. They built homes and businesses near the river which made for easy transportation to get their goods to market. Over time, the town began to grow and develop into a busy community with its own schools, churches, businesses, and residents.Throughout its history, Des Plaines has been a center for education as well as industry. In 1853, the Desplaines Normal School was established in what is now downtown Des Plaines. It became one of the leading institutions of higher learning in Illinois and helped spawn a wave of subsequent educational institutions throughout the state.In addition to itseducational establishment-Des Plaines also played an important role in early American industrialization. In 1879-80, local entrepreneurs created an engine factory called Joliet Works which manufactured railroad cars under contract from various railways across America. Byproducts from this plant went on to help create jobs for locals throughout much of later decades-an era known as “Jolietisation”of local industries.-During World War II (1939-1945), Des Plaine was home to two major military bases: Camp Sherman (later Fort Sheridan) on Northwest Side and Camp Logan on Southeast Side.. These installations served as training grounds for millions American troops before they sailed off into battle overseas.-Today’s economy largely revolves around medical devices manufacturers such as Abbott Laboratories or Johnson & Johnson.; but even these days there are strong reminders thatDes Plaine's past still shapes present day life: many streets bear namesakes like Washington Street or East Main Street; while others still boast factories or warehouses left over from those days

The population of the town peaked at over 60,000 in 1940 but declined to 50,000 by 1960. The population decreased again between 1980 and 1990 before increasing slightly during the 2000s.
