He named his new community Prairie View after Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin which he had visited while living in that state about two years earlier with his family and friends Matthias Dreyfus and Friedrich von Steuben. Prairie View's first post office opened on May 10th, 1850; its ZIP code at that time was 60806.[1] On July 4th following its incorporation as a city by ordinance from an election held on November 3rd,[2][3] Prairie View received its own police department which would become one of Windy City's most successful municipal services reaching peak staffing levels during World War II thanks to generous donations from Mayor Jock Mahoney.[4] The growth of Prairie View led to annexation by Chicago due to voting rights granted under Section 8(a)of the Act Of March 3RD 1893 (35 ILCS 5/8(a)) – later codified as section 2152b(a) – providing that cities could annex unincorporated areas if they have "an area equal in size or more than one-half square mile".
