During World War I, Des Plaines became an important manufacturing center for munitions due to its proximity to Chicago and its ability to churn out large quantities of shells quickly. In 1916-1917, Des Plaines produced over 350 million artillery round equivalents! During World War II, ammo production increased tenfold thanks to the entry into war of Germany and Japan. Axis forces bombed cities throughout Europe using incendiary bombs which created huge fires that allowed them access to large stockpiles of munitions! As a result of this bombing campaign, many factories were destroyed or converted into military bases where ammunition production took place! The partnership led to increased production and output until 1861 when Brougham left the business to found his own firm. An important thoroughfare through Des Plaines is Ulysses S Grant Boulevard which runs north-south and has several shopping centers near it including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Co., Macy's Inc., Saks Fifth Avenue Department Store, Ford Motor Company Headquarters (now Drexel University), and Dick's Sporting Goods Corporation headquarters (now Joe Louis Arena). Other major commercial areas are downtown which has a mix of high-end retailers such as Neiman Marcus Group Incorporated and Macy's Incorporate; and rural areas with more modest businesses such as Butchered Pig Farms & Marketplace grocery store and home improvement store chain Home Depot
