Des Plaines, Illinois is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located on the north side of Chicago. The village was founded in 1847 by Nicholas Des Plaines and his brothers John and Jacob Des Plaines. The Village of Des Plaines was organized on February 15, 1847 as a result of the Illinois State Legislature's act to create townships in Kane County. The first meeting of the Village's trustees took place on March 3, 1847. On December 6, 1850, President-elect James K. Polk appointed George Wessels as Mayor of Des Plaines after he had been nominated by then-Village Trustee Adam Biddle. The town site that would become Des Plaine was surveyed by Levi Le Royer in 1841 and purchased from him two years later for $2 per acre (0·06 hectares). In 1848 the village fathers decided to name the town after Nicholas Jealousy des plaine (1800 - 1865), an American lawyer who served as delegate to France from Cook County during the American Revolutionary War and afterwards worked with other Americans to organize what became known as "the Eighteenth Amendment" to the United States Constitution which granted voting rights to citizens of African descent starting January 1st, 1870 (). On July 2nd 1860 when Potter v Board extended Municipal rights through annexation byongrades it became effective only for wards represented therein east side ward that adjoined Dearborn were annexed immediately while west side ward which adjoined Lake View were left unannexed until they were annexed by Grayslake on November 9th 1966 . From its incorporation until parceling out its land into Township form in 1886 it functioned under one name or another: North Aurora Township (1886-1901), South Aurora Township (1901-1910), West Aurora Township (1910-1920), East Aurora Township (1920-present). As a result of township formation most residential development came about due to developers buying parcels from farmers who ceded them during farm consolidation efforts following World War I; however some homes have been built since then such as Oneida Hills subdivision off Indiana Avenue just south of Racine Street inside city limits
Des Plaines was founded in 1836 by Captain John A. Forney, a lumberman from Maine. The village was named for the Plains of Abraham, which cover much of Iowa and Illinois. In 1845, Des Plaines became the seat of government for the new county of Kane County.
