Dekalb, Illinois was once a thriving city that boasted an impressive amount of firearm manufacturing businesses. Many of these businesses were founded in the early 1800s and continued to produce firearms until the mid-19th century. The industry in Dekalb was so significant that it is often cited as one of the most important gun manufacturing areas in America. Some of the earliest firearms factories in Dekalb were founded by Captain James Hall and his brother, Captain John Hall. They operated a Gun Factory on State Street from 1802 to 1807. This factory produced pistols and rifle cartridges. The next largest firearms factory in Dekalb was located on East Market Street from 1814 to 1830. This factory produced rifles, shotguns, pistols, cannons, and other weapons instruments. Another large firearms manufacturer in Dekalb was George Stephenson’s Manufacturing Company from 1834 to 1841. This company manufactured cannons and other artillery pieces. Captain Samuel Colt began producing handguns at his new armory on Elm Street in 1845. This armory became known as Colt’s Arsenal after Samuel Colt purchased it from its original owner, Moses Browning Sr., in 1848. Colt continued production at this armory until 1863 when he moved it to Hartford Connecticut due to increasing competition from European manufacturers such as French arms maker Chiron et Cie., Austria’s Burgunder Arms Company Ltd., German gun maker Joachim Schneider & Sons AG (JSB), Dutch firm Wesseler & Son Co., British firm Sweet & Maxwell Limited (S&M), American firm Gadsden Firearms Corporation (GFC), Austrian Firm Steyr-Heynigk-Rothaus Gunschule und Maschinenfabrik GmbH (&; “Heynigk Rothaus Gunschule”) - all of which started production around 1850 - making him one of the world's leading handgun producers at this time . In 1865, Colonel John Fenton bought out Colt's Arsenal for $1 million dollars which greatly increased Fenton's involvement with thegun business . He then hired Englishman Henry Dearborn as head designer for revolver production at Colt's Arsenal . Dearborn would go on to develop what is now considered the first modern American revolver design - the US Army Model 1861 Springfield Rifle - which became famous during the American Civil War . In 1870 Fenton sold Colts Armories and took over Dearborn's Designs office within Winchester Repeating Arms Company also located adjacent to Colt Armory . ThereafterDearborn spent most of his days designing revolvers for Winchester while Henry Ford designed guns for Remington Arms Company which made both revolvers and rifles
