Dekalb, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 51,711 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Cook County and the third-largest city in Illinois. Dekalb was founded on May 13, 1868 by George P. Smith and named for General James DeKalb. The Chicago Public Library System's main branch is located in downtown Dekalb. The University of Michigan–Dekalb campus offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs as well as professional training opportunities through its Schools of Business Administration, Health Sciences Administration, Lawyer/Lawyer Assistant Program (JLP), and Veterinary Medicine School. In 2015, the City of Dekalb passed a resolution to rename itself "City of Progress". Dekalb was first settled by German immigrants who came to America between 1847 and 1853. George P Smith organized two companies that built out 1 million acres (4 km2) of land around present day Dekalb from what were then swampy areas near Janklowe Creek. On May 13th, 1868 George P Smith founded "Dekalberts" Incorporated with five other men when he bought 2 lots from John Davenport for $100 each which extended from current Day Drive east to State Street north and west to Dearborn Avenue south including about . A post office called "Dekalo" was established at this settlement on July 3rd, 1870; it closed on October 14th 1880 due to lack of customers because there was no mail service available from Decatur or Chicago. In 1875 Joseph Grysiewicz started making cheese products at his farm near present day Janklowe Creek while working for Wm Bickerton & Sons Ltd., one of several companies that operated around Dekalo during this time period which also included: John Kappeler’s “Bickerton Cheese Factory”; Nicholas Hofer’s “Hofer Cheese Factory”; Fritsch & Krueger’s “Fritsch Brothers Creamery”; Augustus Saint Clair Creagh’s “Anchor Creameries Limited”; Peter Lynch ran a small grocery store next door to Grysiewicz before he moved operations back to his farmstead within three years after starting business under the name Lynch Bros.–today known as Peters Grocery Store LLC.; Daniel Osterman started operating a bakery not far away known today as Donahue's Bakery LLC.; among others local farmers such as August Koenig collected produce donations that were then distributed free into residents' gardens or used simply as animal feedstock for their dairy cows until it became legal for retailers like Kroger beginning in 1922 to sell fresh produce directly to consumers.—This paper chronicling Dekalbal history will focus largely upon these latter six businesses mentioned above although some peripheral aspects may be covered should special interest arise.—Many other local businesses operated during this time but are not listed herein because they either did not have an official record kept or their records have been lost or destroyed over time.—Today Dekalonians enjoy easy access both online and offline resources including government websites like dekalinewsfoundation dot com where you can search through archived media articles about our community dating back centuries ago; Fulton History website where you can browse archives dating back all the way to1863 when our townwas incorporated into Fulton County,—and more modern sources like Google Earth which offers detailed maps depicting every inch (and sometimes more!)of Dekalanbis downtown core since 1969
