When the citizens of Dekalb, Illinois revolted against their government in 1837, they did so with the help of a holster. In that year, General James K. Polk was running for president and needed to shore up his support among the rural farmers who felt left out by the city-dwellers on the periphery of town. He knew that if he could get these people to trust him with their weapons, he could win them over. So he ordered his troops to take possession of all holsters and pistols in Dekalb - an act which set off a arms race between Dearborn Heights and Dekalbtown as each neighborhood attempted to become the capital of holster country. The Revolting Citizens had also created a new society based around self-reliance and independence - something which appealed to many young men who wanted nothing more than to be able to protect themselves without having anyone telling them what To Do or How To Do It. Dekalb is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. Dekalb was founded in 1837 by John A. Dekalb and named for him and for the creek that flowed through it. Dekalb was built on the south side of Chicago River just north of its mouth on Lake Michigan. In 1892 Dekalb became part of the city of Chicago; however, it retained its own government until 1907 when it merged with other towns in the area to become what is now called "Dekalb." The name "Dekalb" has been used by residents there since then as their official name. The town was platted in 1837 by John A. Dekalb, who had come overland from Michigan with his father after being forced out of his home state because he could not pay taxes to a neighboring state's government. John A.'s brother-in-law, George Washington Dearborn (1802–1876), acquired title to land near present-day DeKalb Avenue on which Dekalberts built their first house in 1840. The village site lay at what is now Lemont Street and Kedzie Avenue; but construction did not begin until January 1, 1841 due to icy weather conditions caused by an extreme cold wave that winter.. On December 12th 1840 Anthony Coles arrived from Canada with 114 settlers: men, women and children under the age of 16 living aboard two ships captained by Captain David Fenton – one carrying passengers and one carrying goods – bound for New Orleans where they intended to join an army fighting against Mexico under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna before sailing back across the ocean en route to England.. After landing at Decatur Point on October 10th 1844 they proceeded upriver along la Grange Road (now State Route 30) towards what would be their new home: a small tract belonging to Amos Kendall situated east of modern day Lemont Street between Kedzie Avenue and Poydras Avenue (a location later renamed Applecross Drive). Dawson’s Creek entered into this tract about two miles west of its current junction with la Grange Road; thenceforth known as “Kendall’s Creek” or simply “Kecksville” during much of this early development period…. In 1862 Colonel Jno.[e] L[ord] Pierrepont took command Of all Union forces within three miles [5 km] radius thereof including those stationed at Rock Island Depot…. upon expiration Of his term As colonel He retired from military service To take up a life Of farming At DeKalbi Township In stages From 1865 till 1870 He erected Thereon One very large farmhouse Now standing Which He named after himself And which still stands today….. Upon His death This large farmhouse passed From His hands To His son Geogeorge Washington Dearborn Who lived There For Many Years….. Mrs Gertrude Hennepin gave her Gift Of That House To Constitution Hall Museum In 1978…. On November 15th 1945 President Harry S Truman signed Executive Order 9109 giving approval Forthe merger With Skokie IntoChicago…. Dekalb is located in the Illinois state capital of Springfield, and it is one of the most populous cities in that state. The city was founded by General James DeKalb on April 12, 1809, as a fur-trading post on the banks of the Chicago River. In 1836, Dekalb became an incorporated town and has since grown to include over 120,000 residents. The city is home to Illinois State University and two large hospitals – Memorial Hospital and St. Francis Health System – as well as a number of smaller businesses and institutions. It also has several professional sports teams; including the Illinois Fighting Illini football team which plays its home games at Doak Campbell Stadium in downtown Dekalb, as well as the basketball team which played its first game in 1909 at Chicagoland Park near the University of Michigan campus. The history of Dekalb goes back to 1809 when General James DeKalb arrived from Georgia with his army to help set up a fur trading post on the banks of the Chicago River. At first, Dekalb had only a few buildings erected for his company’s employees; these included a storehouse and barracks for about 100 men. However, after some time DeKalb realized that he needed more space so he began construction on what would become his future city center; this included building a fortification around his post known today as DeKalb Armory Complex. In 1836, following American victories over Napoleon Bonaparte’s forces at New Orleans and Waterloo respectively, Dekalberts decided to move his entire town into central Illinois so that they could benefit from all that new investment being made in central Illinois by Ulysses S Grant’s administration. The move was successful because although Dekalbert’s population initially numbered only 50 people (most of whom lived east of Main Street), within five years their population had swollen to around 2,500 people thanks to increased trade with other states along the Great Lakes region such as Michigan and Wisconsin. In 1840–1841 DekaLbo resident John Marshall built what is now called “the City Hall” on Main Street across from current Daymark Bank; this building served as both DekaLbo mayor’s office during this time period and later served as headquarters for various local governments before being demolished in 1978 following renovations undertaken by then Mayor Richard M Brownell who used it for public events such as open-air markets or Fourth Of July fireworks displays until1998 when it was replaced by the present day Daymark Bank Building adjacent to Interstate 94 just south of Urbandale Road). In 1865–1866 John Marshall again designed/built “the Capitol Annexe” (later renamed “Dekalbb Auditorium”) on North First Street between Market Square eastward towards Urbandale Road; this structure still stands today (alongside various other structures associated with early DekaLbo including Marshall House dating back to 1794 which still stands adjacent to I-294). Finally in 1898– 1899 Mrs Elizabeth Shurtleff completely renovated/remodeled/constructed “the Post Office Department Store & warehouse #2″(now known simply as “The Post Office Department Store & Warehouse #1″) at 203 W Randolph Rd., adjoining current day White Castle Pizza); this structure served bothas an administrative complex for municipal government during this time period while also serving primarilyas an entertainment venue hosting dances etc.; subsequently it was usedfor storage until finally demolition following major interior renovation works carried out by thenMayor Dick Brownell which were completedin2001 resultingin incorporationofDekalanbd intoSpringfield undercurrentcitygovernment name).
