The port was designed to handle an annual load of 30 million containers. Today, it handles a total of 100 million containers a year. The Dekalb Regional Port Authority is responsible for both the management of the port and its use by container shipping companies. It also owns and operates two terminals - the Terminal One at DeKalb County Airport and Terminal Two at Illinois State University-Chicago. In addition, the authority lease out land at four other local airports across central Illinois for container handling capacity. In 1984, Dekalb County voters passed a measure authorizing the creation of a regional port authority within its borders. This permit allowed for importation and export of goods from all fifty states as well as foreign countries. The first shipment from Dekalb arrived on October 3, 1984 - courtesy of CNBLUS Inc., which operated Terminal One at DeKalb County Airport then leased terminal space toContainer Airlines (now Delta Air Lines). The early years were difficult for the fledgling port authority; it faced competition from larger commercial ports in nearby cities such as Chicago, Milwaukee, St Louis, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky etc..
