Dekalb is a town in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,879 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Chicago River and forms part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. Dekalb was founded by Daniel Boone in 1772 and named for him. The first European to visit Dekalb was Pierre-Jacques Marquette in 1801. In 1836, President Andrew Johnson issued an executive order calling for all American Indian villages east of Missouri to be removed or destroyed because they were considered hostile towards white settlers. The Order also ordered that any Christian families living east of those lines must leave their homes within 24 hours or face expulsion from their village. In 1840, President Martin Van Buren signed an executive order ordering all Indian nations west of the Mississippi River to remove any land they had not already surrendered to white settlement. This order led to much conflict as many tribes refused to give up their lands without compensation or guarantees from the Ulysses S Grant administration. Some Native Americans even took up arms against Ulysses S Grant's forces during the Battle of Wyandotte Creek near Prairie du Chien in 1845. On November 5, 1862, General Robert E Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox Court House after a three-day battle which resulted in more than 500 casualties including 60 percent of Confederate generals (including Lee). At Appomattox Court House Virginia threw her weight behind Union General George McClellan and he recommended that she do so with respect to Lincoln's assassination two days earlier; however Lincoln's body was never found and posthumously accepted as having been assassinated by Confederate general John Wilkes Booth instead. "Dekalb" comes from "dekalon", meaning "a small stream." According to one source it may have originated from French phrases such as "Le désert de la Kalamazoo" (The Desert of Lansing) due to its location along both sides of Michigan’s Lake Michigan shoreline. The first recorded reference to Dekalb Township appeared on October 15th 1830 whenWebster’s Dictionary listed it as “Decklynge”Decklynge. By 1840 it had been renamed “Dekalby” after Sir Thomas Dekker who laid out what is now DeKalb County.
