Dekalb, Illinois is an incorporated community in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Dekalb has a large central business district and several small villages surrounding it. The name "Dekalb" is thought to be derived from the Shawnee word "deka-wabasha," meaning "small place." The village of Dekalb was founded by white settlers in 1837 as a farming community on the north side of the Des Plaines River. It grew rapidly due to its location and excellent soils. In 1858, Dekalb became a city and gained full statehood in 1963. Dekalb was first settled by Germans who built homes near what is now Eastern Road and Water Street in 1837. A post office was established at DeKalb in 1840, and named for General James de Kalbfusch, who had been instrumental in bringing about American independence during the Mexican–American War. When DeKalb became a city on December 15, 1863, it moved its City Hall from downtown to what is now Second Avenue and Arlington Drive (now Belmont Avenue). At that time there were few public transportation options within town so citizens relied heavily on horseback or wagon travel for most transactions outside of town limits. In 1898–99 residents raised money through a drive to build an electric streetlight which they later used as their campaign slogan “One light at a time!” In 1908 Mayor John Fenton convened what would become known as the “Original Town Meeting” which authorized building of a new City Hall on North Arlington Drive adjacent to then-Public School No. 5 where today’s First Baptist Church stands; this meeting also authorizes construction of such important civic amenities as Main Street between Decatur Boulevard and Arlington Drive; these streets were laid out according to present day street grid pattern popularized by Chicago Streets Department engineers after World War II while still under development plans following Municipal Code changes effective February 1st 1915 A fire destroyed much of town center late one night during prohibition era government shutdown causing some people to question if anything could be done about escalating costs associated with being without services during those difficult times After years of study & deliberation locals voted 3/5ths yes into expanding services beyond normal hours allowing approximately 2 more blocks eastward including current day Park Plaza Shopping Center after closedowning Wexler Drug Store which sat across Decatur Boulevard from our original City Hall demolished circa 1965 just prior to annexation into neighboring city parkland

Dekalb is a town in Du Page County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of DuPage county. Dekalb was first platted on November 3, 1847 as "Dekalb Springs". It was named for General James deKalb who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as a U.S. Representative from Illinois from 1853 to 1861. The first settlers in Dekalb were farmers and their families who began arriving in 1845. By 1850 there were over 100 people living in Dekalb Springs alone. Gradually other small towns sprouted up around Dekalb; these included Rome (1851), Mount Prospect (1855), Arlington Heights (1857), Schaumburg (1859), Naperville (1861), and Wheaton (1863). In 1871 the Illinois Legislature created a new township called Decatur which made Dekalb an incorporated town with its own board of trustees and police force. On October 1, 1886, following the consolidation of allDuPage counties into one state under Govt act No. 41st Ill., Dekalb became one of 25 communities within Cook County along with Chicago and Oak Lawn to form Cook County Park District #2 which still governs most aspects of life within that community today In 1915 D’Urso's Shoes store opened at 5th & South Streets in what is now known as Market Square Shopping Center and soon became known throughout the city for its high quality shoes and accessories offered by owner D’Urso himself until his death in 1984 In 1951 Dick's Sporting Goods moved into what is now known as Midway Mall on State Street east of I-55 between US 60 and Decatur Boulevard after buying Orchard Mall off North Side residents wanted to close down their shopping center due to lack of traffic flow since De Kalbis closed his store two years earlier while they renovated it In 1992 Tim Horton's vacated its building on Clark Street next door to the future McCormick Place site where it had been located for more than 80 years
Dekalb was founded in 1811 by George Dekalb. He established the town on a tract of land that he had bought from the Shawnee Indians. The town was named after him and his brother, Alexander Dekalb. It grew rapidly and by 1825 it had a population of around 100 people. In 1829, Dekalb became president of the Illinois Central Railroad and led the company through difficult times during its early years. In 1860, he donated land to establish DeKalb County, Illinois.
