Dekalb was founded by white settlers in 1833 as a small town on the banks of the Doniphan River. In 1868, it became part of what was then known as Cook County. After years of growth and development, Dekalb reached its current size and prominence during World War II when it became one of the most heavily bombed cities in America with over 30% of all bomb damage done to American cities. Despite this bombing history, Dekalb has remained an economic powerhouse with a strong job market and robust cultural life.

Dekalb is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and home to the University of Illinois at DeKalb. Dekalb was founded on November 3, 1837 by John Newton Dekalb and his wife Lucy as a post office called Newtonville. The first African American resident of Dekalb was James Caldwell. Dekalb is located in central Illinois on the south bank of the Chicago River. According to the 2010 census, its population was 26,812. It is surrounded by six other townships: Addison Township to the north, Armitage Township to the east, Franklin Park Township to the south (the only township within Dekalb), Hinsdale Township to the west and Vernon Heights Township to the northwest. The city of Chicago lies just across river from Dekalb Proper with a total population over 1000; however there has never been any intermingling between those two populations which may account for some of Dekalb's unique character - for example its small size compared to nearby Urbandale or Elmhurst Village (both 1 million+ people). In fact as recently as 2000-2001 local officials were still working out an agreement with Chicagoland's largest malloperator about how best would be shared parking and retail space between both cities - an arrangement that ultimately fell through due mainly to differences in zoning laws around what type of businesses could open up inside larger malls vs smaller villages etc... Accordingly while much has changed since Johnny Appleseed plowed his apple tree down in 1775 near where present day Downtown DekalB stands (and later laid claim land eastward on Lake Michigan), one thing that has not changed are most residents' fondness for their small town roots and love of serving others locally including being among "The Five Towns" – DeKalbi’s five sister towns that share resources such as education, health care and commerce – along with Holyoke (east side) and North Aurora (west side). Today's economy depends largely upon research universities like UIUC which draw students from all over but also because many traditional large employers have moved outtown or closed their doors in recent years: Weisburger’s department store closed its doors after fifty years in operation; Sears Holdings spun off their Kenmore appliance business into Sears Canada; Jabil Circuit City shuttered its doors less than two months after opening; Brown & Williamson Tobacco Products merged with Lorillard & Co., creating oneof America’s largest tobacco companies... so too have many small businesses closed or relocated away during this time period including Laundromat Proprietary Limited which operated out of a building sandwiched between two auto sales lots until it vacated it last year when owner Rich Fenton sold it for $1 million to developer David McNamara... This lack thereof unionization reflects not only economic necessity but also de facto segregationism throughout our community due chieflyto White flight following World War II when many white families left Kendallville/DeKhalben because they found jobs available elsewhere - often leaving behind African Americans who were then forced into positions such as janitorial work or manual labor outside their homes... today black seniors make up almost 40% of our population if you include those age 50+. Indeed given current trends we are likely headed towards even more pronouncedracial imbalance going forward should demographic changes continue unabated - something we take seriously here at UIUC thanks especiallyto our multi-ethnic student body
