Dekalb, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of Illinois. It is bordered on the east by Cook County and on the north by Lake Michigan. The population was 5,718 at the 2010 census. Dekalb was founded in 1836 as a township in Stephenson County by DeKalb Township trustees John Gentry and Amos Kendall. It became a city in 1907 and has since grown to be one of the most populous cities in Northwest Illinois. The first settler in Dekalb was Nicholas Norton, who arrived there with his family from Maryland on July 4, 1836. The name Dekalb comes from French meaning "a place where fruit trees are set." In 1837, Edward Alexander McCormick moved to Dekalb from Pekin, Ohio with his wife Sarah Aiken McCormick and their six children. They established a farm known as "McCormick's Grove." In 1840, Stephen Hahnemann purchased an acreage along what is now State Route 6 near present-day Harrisonburg for $25 cash or two oxen or four wagons loaded with goods for transportation to Stonington, Connecticut. He named it "Hahnemann's Grove" after himself and built a cabin there. In 1841 he married Anna Sophia Klüppelberger from Würzburg, Germany and together they started a grocery store called the Germania Store on Main Street in Dekalb which served as both business headquarters for DeKalb Township until 1865 when it was moved to Rockford due to competition from Knobbe & Co., also located in Rockford at that time. During this time period – late 19th century America – farmers turned increasingly towards raising corn instead of wheat because corn could be stored more effectively than wheat while still yielding some bushels of grain per acre (this technique would later be picked up by modern-day peanut farmers). By 1850 corn had become so important that de facto laws were passed prohibiting any person except those owning land within 2 miles of any marketable crop from transporting product over state lines without getting explicit permission from local authorities; this provision stood until 1945 when it was repealed by state statute following World War II # induced demand for agricultural products statewide (see MI Agricultural Marketing Board). It wasn't until 1861 that Nathan Sibly opened Sibly's grove store on Third Street which functioned as both general store and bakery throughout much of Northwestern Illinois during the early 19th century prior to its move westward into Lombard Avenue Plaza eventually becoming part of Sears Roebuck & Co.'s empire during Prohibition era years 1922-1929 #Sible operated store until moving out onto Old National Road NW approximately 1956 when building ceased operations due mainly to lack of customer demand . . . With new transportation methods like railroads developing starting about 1830 railways brought milk production closer to consumers increasing prices paid by processors leading cream cow operators such as James Fenton who began packing milk into wooden caskets made available through Chicagoans Augustus Molineux (1821-1892)and Joseph Medill (1784-1873)finally providing retail customers with high quality milk product direct plying markets (# See Cream Cows: A History ). By 1870 Chicagoans Isaac Niles (1787–1863), Elijah Boudinot (1800–1867), Anthony Comstock(1800–1868), Lewis Cass(1795–1865)were importing raw materials needed for manufacturing process such as limestone grading etcetera making Chicago one of world's leading industrial centers during this time period

Dekalb was founded in 1811 by James Dekalb and his wife Martha. The first store on the current site of Dekalb was built in 1814. The town became a village in 1851, and then a city in 1903. In 1865, Dekalb was renamed Indianapolis after Indiana's capital, Indianapolis.
