Dekalb is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and home to the University of Illinois at DeKalb. Dekalb was founded by Captain James Loyd in 1811. It was named for Colonel John Dekalb, who had been its first postmaster. Dekalb's growth started out slowly but steadily over time. In 1830, it had a population of only fifty-five people; by 1840, it had more than one thousand residents. By 1860, Dekalb had become an active center for business and political life in the area. In 1868, Congress passed the Dawes Plan which awarded land to Native Americans in what is now Northern Illinois as part of Ulysses S Grant’s General Allotment Act. This event helped spur the town’s development as a commercial center and also created new jobs for local farmers during Reconstruction period America. In 1870, Dekalb became one of twenty-six townships within Cook County when it was created from parts of McLean Township and North Side Township. The township voted to create its own school board in 1875 and then two years later joined with Whitehall Township to form West Chicago Township (later known as Chicago Heights). Due to this growth, Dekalb experienced some major infrastructure projects including construction of the original Union Pacific Railroad line through town in 1888 and completion of sewer systems in 1899–1900; these projects helped increase both housing prices and GDP around town throughout the 19th century and into the 20th century. During World War II, many businesses closed down due to lack of demand or enemy bombings but many others survived thanks to military contracts that came along with war efforts like building tanks or providing munitions storage capacity for allies like Japan or China (during this time period called “The Golden Age”of Americanindustrialization). After 9/11 attacks on New York City – which left nearly 3 thousand dead – Dekalb beganto experience large-scale community mobilization around national security concerns following September 11th politics as well as increased attention from Homeland Security Investigations activity targeting numerous high profile criminals living & operating within our community
