The Dekalb Arsenal was a firearms manufacturer in Dekalb, Illinois. It was founded in 1866 by Colonel John A. Richardson and continued to operate until 1934. The arsenal produced rifles and handguns, including the Model 1886 National Rifle Association (NRA) rifle, the Springfield Armory M1911 pistol, and the Smith & Wesson Model 686 revolver. Dekalb Arsenal was one of three arsenals operating in Illinois during World War I; the other two were at Grand Rapids and Rock Island. In 1918, the Dekalb Arsenal became a part of NRA, which was headquartered there from 1919 to 1934. In 1925, NRA moved its headquarters from Chicago to Springfield, Missouri; however, it continued to use the Dekalb Armory for manufacturing purposes until 1934. At that time, all types of pistols were produced at the armory except revolvers which were produced at Rock Island Armory instead. During World War II (1939-1945), gun manufacture recommenced production at both arsenals but only rifles wereproduced due to wartime restrictions on pistols output. After World War II ended, NRA focused on shotguns which it began producing in 1948. Gun production ceased at Dekalb Arsenal in 1954 while Rock Island Armory continuedproducing revolvers until 1957 when they also ceased production completely due to federal regulations limiting handgun sales..

Dekalb was founded in 1837 by General James DeKalb and his wife Nancy on the east side of the Chicago River. In 1847 it became a school town and in 1853 it became an incorporated town. In 1915 it merged with Plainfield to form Dekalb- Plainfield Township. The name "Dekalb" is derived from General James DeKalb's home state of Georgia and refers to a creek that passes through the township boundary. The history of Dekalb goes back to 1837 when General James DeKalb and his wife Nancy settled on the east side of the Chicago River where they opened a trading post known as DeKalbs Fortification Post (later renamed Dekalbertsville). The first school in Dekalby was organized on December 12, 1838 under the name of Jefferson Academy which had been started by Rev John Laddington about two years earlier. The first graduating class from this school were Mr Greenlee, Dr Cady, Mr Whitehurst and Miss Sullivan who all graduated with high distinction in 1840. In 1847, when Dekalbjty became an incorporated town, it added its own hospital which was located on Main Street near what is now Old Town Square; this hospital operated until 1956 when it was closed due to budget cuts within Cook County government. On July 4th, 1850, during a tornado that touched off several local raids throughout Illinois resulting in over $1 million damage or property loss including much homes and businesses within Dekalopplerville area only one building sustained any damage however that Building still stands today as part of downtownDeKalbian History Museum dedicated to this time period On November 5th 1865 during America's Civil War Abraham Lincoln made his first speech from Peoria Castle before troops called for service from Illinois units fighting at Donelson Barracks outside Memphis Missouri giving rise to what would become known as "Lincoln's March". After Confederate General Robert Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 he entered into negotiations for peace terms with Ulysses S Grant who arrived at Fair Park later that day; these negotiations led ultimately into Grant's surrender at Mineola on April 10th 1865 On May 3rd 1870 citizens of Decatur voted not to annex their adjacent village of plainfield into their municipal boundaries while plainfield residents voted overwhelmingly against annexation; because both villages were represented by representative bodies other than their respective governing councils nothing further action could be taken towards either village until 1888 when Decatur finally annexed plainfield becoming also one municipality within Cook County* D'kalamptoniawas born out of frustration felt betweenDecatur Residents over lack OF AUTHORITY & CONTROL over our Village Affairs despite having passed resolutions COUNCILING us thru OUR GOVERNING COUNCIL!
