Deerfield, Illinois is a small town located in the northcentral Illinois region. The population of Deerfield was 9,821 at the 2010 census. The town is bordered by Champaign to the east, Urbana to the south, and Bloomington to the west. The first permanent settler in Deerfield was John Cook in 1811. Cook had been brought up on a farm near Normal, Indiana and he came down from that state with his family. He founded the village of Deerfield about half a mile east of present-day central Deerfield. Cook's grandson Nicholas settled there in 1795 and named it after himself – deer field meaning “place where deer are pastured”. Deerfield became an incorporated village on April 14, 1879. It was then known as “ Unionville” and “Deerfield Heights” because of its high ground location close to Chicago but separated from other villages by open fields or woods. On July 1, 1903 it became part of the city of Chicago through annexation by that city. In 1916, residents voted to change their name back to Deerfield after petitioning Mayor John Hynes (D). The current name honours Isaac Nevin who donated land for a shopping mall in 1976 and also helped start a local paper mill which still operates today as JN Media Incorporated.. Deerfield, Ill. is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,711 at the 2010 census. In 1840, two brothers founded a grocery store on North Avenue which became one of Deerfield's largest businesses until it closed its doors in 1957. In 1865, John Fournier bought land from Mrs. Sarah Swartzenthal for $1 million and began construction on his dream home called "Fournier Manor". The house would later be renamed "Deerfield Manor" after him and remain one of Illinois' most famous homes throughout its history. The first shopping mall located in Deerfield was Park Plaza Shopping Center which opened on November 15th 1994 adjacent to South High School across from Parkland Hospital
