Deerfield is an agricultural town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Chicago and on the border of Will County. The village of Deerfield was incorporated in 1872, and the town was organized as a village in 1909. The current name is derived from deer that were common in the area before humans began to live there. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Deerfield were French traders looking for fur traders along the Great Lakes region. In 1795, General James Korsakoff discovered land that would become Deerfield when he invaded northern Indiana during his campaign against Indian Chief Wyandot leader Black Hawk. A group of Polish settlers named Lubinowski settled on part of this land which they called "Wadowice". In 1800, John Dickenson founded a grist mill here which became one of the most important mills in Deere Valley. In 1837, Abraham Lincoln visited this area while campaigning for election as President and purchased some property here for $10 per acre (about $ ). This site is also where he built his summer home at Ford’s Grove near present-day Elmhurst Cemetery . The first permanent settler in what now Deerfield was Nicholas de Burgh who arrived with his family from Scotland around 1793. He established himself east of present-day Orchard Lake and built a log cabin known as "Deer Field" about three miles north ofpresent-day Deere Valley.. His son Robert Fenton bought "Deer Field" from Nicholas de Burgh about 1800 and continued to run it until his death circa 1827 or 1830.. After Fenton's death, it passed through several ownership changes until it acquired by Abel Hubbard soon after Hubbard moved to Illinois from Vermont around 1840.. Hubbard raised many horses here and sold them to farmers throughout central Illinois.. After Hubbard's death circa 1850, it passed through several more owner changes before becoming part of Joseph Larkin's farmstead about 1860 .. From Larkin's farmstead it passed into Jethro Tullock's hands about 1870 then into George Sylvester Popejoy's hands about 1880 .. Popejoy ran it as a small grocery store until 1945 when it became an agricultural cooperative . The current owners are Arthur Neece Sr., Jr., Mary Neece ,and their children Arthur Neece Sr., III (co-op president), Edwin Francis Neece (coordinator), Jane Marie Terrill (manager)
