There is no question that Deerfield, Illinois has had a long and significant gun history. The city was first settled in 1838 by Horace Greeley and his family, who started a farm on the present-day site of Deerfield. The first guns to be used in Deerfield were rifles belonging to the local militia. In 1865, antiques collector George Weiser bought a rifle from an old Georgian settler named John Kapp. Kapp had been instrumental in creating the first hunting societies in America and he was also well know for his collection of firearms and artifacts. Theodore Roosevelt visited Deerfield in 1903 and observed that “the people hereabouts aregunners par excellence” (Dixon). Deerfield is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,857 at the 2010 census. Deerfield was chartered in 1836 and named for George Deer, an early settler. It became a city in 1893. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers to the area that would become Deerfield were David Jones and his family who arrived around 1790 from Maryland. David built a log cabin on the banks of the Kankakee River where he now stands. In 1824, John Deere settled on a farm adjoining David's cabin and began to grow corn and beans. In 1835, George Washington Carver settled here and started to raise chickens, pigs, cattle and other livestock which he sold to local farmers throughout his career as an entrepreneur. A post office called Deerfield was established in 1836 by Edward Cady with headquarters at what is now the First Baptist Church building on Wabash Avenue east of Hull Road (now Bob Hope Drive). The first mail order catalogue from Sears & Roebuck was mailed from Deerfield on October 15th, 1837 using three wagons full of books bought by mail order customer Jno Hargrave from Poultney ( Vermont ). A year later, when deer hunting became popular among Illinoisans due to its plentiful game resources including deer antlers trophies available off message boards all over the state, Deere organized a shooting match between himself and Henry Clay Frick Sr., one of Illinois' leading gentlemen hunters at Steuben Hills near Bloomington in May 1840 also using three wagons full of goods bought by customers through Sears & Roebuck's catalogues In 1865 when Abraham Lincoln was elected President after a close election campaign against Stephen Douglas – one of only two Ulysses S Grant victories during the Civil War – Deerfield residents voted him into office within hours after his inauguration at their home on present day Woodlawn Avenue After Reconstruction ended with newly designed Jim Crow laws enacted following African American emancipation - primarily through legislation passed by Congress under then- Speaker Andrew Johnson – many white South SideChicagoans moved into this largely black anti-segregation area as manufacturing jobs declined elsewhere during Reconstruction while African Americans continued working in white collar jobs such as service industries becoming prevalent . Deerfield was founded in 1837 by John Deere and his wife, Rebecca. The town was named for a deer that once grazed on the property. Deerfield became one of the largest villages in Illinois and quickly became an important center for agriculture. The Deersons ran a large grocery store and feed mill in the town until their death in 1912. Over the years, Deerfield has experienced many changes including becoming a suburb of Chicago, being annexed by Rockford in 1955, and then becoming its own municipality in 1998.
