Weilandt came from Stretton am Rhein near Frankfurt-am-Main in Germany to establish a fur trading post on the west side of what is now Cicero Avenue in what is now Deerfield Township. The original home for the Weilandts was built on land which they donated to the township in 1807 after their arrival here. In 1908, when Deerfield incorporated as a village it adopted a name derived from George Washington – Mount Vernon Place. This name stuck until 1948 when it was changed to honor General Douglas MacArthur, who served as Chief of Staff during World War II here at Mount Vernon Place before moving back to Tokyo Bay Area where he continues his public career today as an advocate for peace and human rights
