The first settlement in what is now Deerfield took place in 1812 when John Hersey and his family established a farm there. In 1832, George Washington Carver arrived there and started a agricultural colony that later became known as Carver County. The town of Deerfield was founded by members of the Hersey family who had purchased land from the government for $1 per acre (later raised to $2). There were few buildings until 1840 when two churches were built: one for Methodists and one for Baptists. A post office was established at Deerfield in 1847 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln visited Deerfield while he was on his way to visit Ford Motor Company executives near Dearborn Heights in Michigan. He stopped at a farm on Center Street which belonged to General David Dixon and met Mr. Hersey who told him about the new community that had been founded just east of town named after him – Deerfield Township – with lots designated for purchase by citizens since no other township existed within miles where they could locate their homes comfortably or build stores or businesses convenient thereto…. After Lincoln's visit, many people decided to move into this new community because its boundaries coincided with their own personal ones; they did not feel they needed another township nearby as they already lived close enough to all their friends and relatives….. Over time, more people began moving into this community including lawyers, doctors, engineers, politicians etc., making it an even more populous center of society….. By 1900 almost everyone living within 3 miles radius of deerfield had moved there………. Some residents still maintain contact with those earliest settlers through visits each year during Pioneer Day ceremonies held at various places around town…. Many old houses are still standing today including Mrs. Hersey's original home which she bought from her husband 50 years ago….. Today’s downtown has seen many changes over the years but its core values remain unchanged: neighborliness, respect for property rights etc… In recent years deerfield has seen some construction projects along State Road 12th St which has caused concern among residents about traffic congestion caused by so much development....Although some residents are unhappy about theseprojects due to potential impacts on quality of life issues such as increased noise levels etc., overall most appear content with current development patterns…… Deerfields thriving economy continues despite problems occasional brought on by external factors such as weather related outages

Deerfield was founded in 1795 by John Deere and his wife, Sarah. The first settler in the area was Jonas James who built a cabin on the east side of the stream known as Deerfield creek. A post office called Deerfield was established in 1802, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1870, two brothers named Julius and Augustus Lever bought land from James and started a farm that became Deerfield Township. The Lever family operated the farm until 1924 when it passed to their son-in-law, Harry Wirths. Wirths sold the farm to Jens Pausch in 1951. Pausch developed the property into an agricultural community with a population of over 2,000 people by 1966.
