Deerfield is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,754 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Deerfield was founded in 1847 by Daniel Smith and his wife Elizabeth Deering as a ranching community on the east side of Lake Michigan. In 1872, Deerfield became a village with a population of just over 1,000. In 1976, Deerfield became an incorporated municipality with its own government and school system. The town has since grown to include an adjacent unincorporated community known as Deerfield Beach. The first settler in what is now Deerfield was Daniel Smith who arrived there from Palatine Township on the west side of Lake Michigan in 1847. He and his wifeElizabeth Deering purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present-day downtown Deerfield from John Pritzker for $5 per acre (0.25 per sq mi). Their farmstead grew into what is now the heart of deerfield today with 6 buildings: 3 barns and 3 homes - all built between 1847 and 1850. In 1872, Dickmann & Company shipped eighty barrels (approximately 21 m3) of oil upriver from Petesburg Landing to Beardstown where it was used to lighten wagons during summer months when transportation on the Illinois Central Railroad was slow due to heavy rains that year; this event helped spur development around Beardstown which continued until about 1926 when all traffic ceased due to construction projects along I-90 southward outside of Chicago proper The village had two schools; one opened in1872 while the other opened in 1916 before becoming closed down completely during World War II because so many people were needed near military bases across the country . A new school district was created effective July 1st 1977 when most parts of Cook County were annexed into suburbanChicago including much larger areas such as Northbrook Park cattle pastures , Dunnsboro Village , Harvey Heights etc... The original village hall still stands today on Elm Street in central Deerfield Beach providing administrative services for both villages combined which have since been replaced by more recent structures . It served as both district headquarters for both villages from 1976 until 2000 and also housed various civic organizations through out those years including Rotary Club, American Legion Post #827 & Boys/Girls Scouts club before being sold off to developers who transformed it into luxury condos It should be noted that not all properties within present day deerFIELD Village were developed or owned by residents; some parcels located further away along Elm Street or even outside city limits were gifted or donated property without any effort on their part..
