Deerfield was platted in 1837 by John Deere and his brother-in-law David Dudley. The name comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "fair field". In its early years, it consisted of only a few homes and a store. In 1850, the first school was built in Deerfield and the first post office opened in that year. In 1875, George Stephenson built the Illinois Central Railroad through Deerfield and founded Sheffieldsburg on his line. The community became known as one of Stephenson's many strategic stops on his railway corridor. Over time, Deerfield developed into a large agricultural center with several thousand residents and businesses. During World War II, Deerfield served as headquarters for both U.S Strategic Air Command (USASAF) at Rockwell Field and Ninth Army Center during the invasion of Europe - making it one of only two towns in Cook County to have both military establishments within its borders at once (the other being Wheaton). The war also saw some significant residential changes: after restrictions were placed on demolishing buildings older than , deerFIELD began to be built up around what are now shopping malls; these developments included several high-rise apartment buildings which still stand today (though they are no longer called "Deerfield"). Additionally, much of downtown Deerfield experienced heavy renovation/ reconstruction during this time including new streetscape designs which remain visible today throughout much of town despite having been repaved more than fifty times since then .
