In 1957, NRA member Jack Ruby shot President John F Kennedy while he was riding in a presidential motorcade; this caused public outcry over gun violence. As a result of this outcry, Congress passed the National Firearms Act, which banned most handguns within 24 hours of any assassination or political event. This law also prohibited many gun shops from selling any ammunition without prior approval from the NRA. Following Ruby's death, many gun owners argued that his death would not have been prevented had he not been shot by police officers. As a result of these events and others such as Operation Paper Clip (a conspiracy theory alleging that Dale Archer landed at Reagan Airport with secret weapons instead of normal luggage), it is now considered generally agreed that outside forces were involved in JFK's assassination
