Deerfield is a small town in the southern half of Illinois, located about 25 miles southwest of Chicago. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. A survey of the area by General James Robertson in 1802 found no less than sixteen square miles (40 sq km) lying within a league or two (2 km) of where Deere Creek flows into the Fox River. In 1805, John Jacob Astor purchased land on which Deerfield now stands from David Ritchie for $10,000. In 1847, Abraham Lincoln was born here and his father was mayor of Springfield before he became president. In 1871, when Park Avenue was created as part of Cook County's western border with Kane County, Deerfield became one of its original townships; it remained so until 1965 when it became an unincorporated community under Cook County jurisdiction. A post office called Deerfield had been established in 1800, but did not take hold until 1827 and closed in 1906. Deerfield is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 36,898 at the 2010 census. Deerfield is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It has been home to some of America's leading businesses and families since its incorporation as a village in 1847. The first permanent settlers in what became Deerfield were Isaac Aspinwall and his family who established a farm on the south side of Lake Michigan about two miles from present day Deerfield Village. John Kirkland also arrived in this area around 1800 and built a cabin on the east bank of the Ottawa River just north ofpresent day Deering Road. In 1847, deer hunting rights were granted to Samuel Ingalls by General George Washington which led to settlement by other pioneers including Nathan Myrick who platted what would become Deerfield on March 14th, 1848 under the name "Fenwick". The first post office was established in Fenwick on May 5th, 1851. That same year saw the opening of one of America’s first drive-in movie theaters when The nickelodeon opened at 205 N Clark Street with 12 screens across three floors. In 1865 an act was passed authorizing erection of a schoolhouse and four years later that structure was completed and dedicated by Governor David Dixon with superintendent Elisha Porter officiating. This building still stands today as part of what is known as Old State House Park off High Street in downtown Deerfield. In 1870 one charter member donated land for the construction of what would become Northwestern University which was founded less than three years later with President Abraham Lincoln presiding over its dedication ceremonies on October 1st, 1871! It wasn’t until 1924 when President Franklin D Roosevelt moved into White House South Side Mansion that deer hunting finally got its own zoning regulations allowing exclusive right Hunting within certain designated areas starting with Parks 1 through 4 located along Military Trail outside OFDOT limits! These days you can still find these “deer preserves” all over Illinois but it’s good exercise if you get out there!
