In 1812, John Brown and James Wilkinson began manufacturing nails and other products at their foundry on the north side of town. Ammunition was not produced in town until 1838 when Tomahawk rifle bullets were invented by Samuel Colt. These round bullets were made from buckshot and birdshot which had been collected by farmers and hunters during the annual hunting season. In 1845, George Armstrong became the headmaster of Deerfield Academy where he required students to purchase rounds of ammunition for their rifles. At this time, deer hunting was an important part of school life in America. When Armstrong died in 1848, his son George took over as headmaster and continued to require ammunition purchases for his students at the academy. Ammunition production increased rapidly during the 1850s because new technologies such as percussion caps and smokeless powder made firearms more accurate and efficient than previous designs. By 1861, Deerfield had become a major center for gunpowder production due to its location on the main road between Chicago and St Louis. Arsenal workers manufactured all types of ordnance including artillery shells, small arms cartridges, cannonsballs, torpedoes and mines. In 1865, Huntingdon Bombs was founded in Deerfield with a mandate to produce high-explosive munitions for military use. This company became one of the largest producers of explosives in North America until it merged with another company (Litton) in 1928

Today deerFIELD features many popular culture attractions such as its annual Halloween parade which attracts thousands of spectators; its art festivals; and its large collection of antique furniture and appliances donated by locals throughout the year (many of which are auctioned off). Despite these successes, however, deerFIELD remains much more than just another typical suburban community - it offers unique opportunities for cultural exchange between residents from different economic backgrounds and cultures."

Deerfield is a small town in the westcentral portion of the U.S. state of Illinois, located on the Sangamon River. The population was 5,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet metropolitan area and is one of five towns in Cook County that make up Chicagoland. Deerfield was platted in 1800 by Nicholas Deering and named for deer seen near his farmhouse on the Sangamon River. A post office called Deerfield was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. The community became a village in 1907, and Incorporated as a city on November 3, 1912, by an act of the legislature under the name "Chicago". On December 15, 1920, it merged with neighboring South Elgin to form one large city with a population of over 100,000 people. The first settler to arrive in what would become Deerfield were two sisters who arrived from New York City on May 10, 1825: Maria Cephus (died 1829) and Catharine Beekman (died 1830). They built their initial home on what is now Prairie View Road close to where present-day Illinois State University stands today. Their brother Isaac also foundedا along with Nicholas Deering мhe first store there which sold groceries direct to consumers rather than through family members or friends like today's grocery stores do In 1837 Daniel Boone came into town as part of his famous survey expedition funded by General James Kansa via subscription money from settlers living nearby What he found here—the site now occupied by Illinois State University—inspired him to start cattle ranching Here he began building fences around present day Deerfield complete with watch towers —an important early warning system against Native American attack
Deerfield was founded in 1809 by the Reverend John H. Deering and his wife, Eliza Jane. The city became a community of about 25 people in 1821 when it was organized as a village. In 1830, Deerfield incorporated as a town and grew to become one of the largestMidwestern towns with a population of over 500 people by 1851. The town's growth came from its connections to the larger cities in Illinois, especially Chicago and Indianapolis, both of which were growing rapidly during this time. Deerfield also benefited from its location on the western side of Illinois, closer to Northwestern universities and other major metropolitan areas. By 1860, Deerfield had double its current size with over 1,000 residents. However, despite these successes, deerfield experienced some difficult times during the late 19th century including struggling financially during the Panic of 1873 and experiencing significant fire danger during the Great Chicago Fire of1871
