Decatur is a city in southcentral Illinois, United States. The population was 81,823 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Decatur County and the second most populous municipality in Illinois after Chicago. As of the 2010 census, its population included 14,572 housing units. The name "Decatur" was given to it by General David Dixon in 1813 as part of his Treaty of Paris following Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo. The first European settlement in what is now Decatur was on Mayflower Compact land sold by John Purchas to Abraham Lincoln in 1836 for $5 per acre (0·34 km²). Prior to this time, Des Peres had been a trading post on the Potawatomi River east of downtown Chicago. On December 12, 1837 – four days after General Nathan Bedford Forrest's raid into Indiana that resulted in four killed and twenty-six wounded – a group of men from Quincy organized an expedition under Captain James Kapparent to explore a new route for traders down the Mississippi River valley. They reached Fort Dearborn on January 3, 1838 and named their outpost "Decatur." General Nathan Bedford Forrest raided this fort during his March 9–11 campaign against Indian forces led by Colonel Robert Ewell Howard near Decatur on April 3rd and 4th1838; three soldiers were killed and five others taken prisoner while seven hundred arrows were shot at them; however no damage was done to the fortifications or buildings. In 1840, Augustus Kelley purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) north of present day Decatur from John Pohle for $10 per acre (3·28 m²). This location became known as Kelley Park where he built a home which still stands today. In 1846 Charles Goodyear established his tannery at what is now Goodyear Bluff across from US Highway 506 northeast of downtown Decatur. Goodyear became one of America's leading manufacturers of rubber tires and other tire products beginning with his establishment here in 1865 which made him one of Chicago’s wealthiest men until his death in 1927.Goodyear also donated land adjoining US Highway 506 east of town for use as an agricultural fairgrounds which still stand today as American Prairie Fairgrounds

It was founded in 1847 by General George Armstrong Custer during his ill-fated attempt to cross the Great Lakes from Canada into America. The Police Department has 6 officers including 2 Sergeants and 2 Chiefs which provide law enforcement services to the citizens of Decatur through their Districts which represent approximately 68% of all crimes reported to Police Department across Cook County The first post office in Decatur opened on November 1st, 1847 under a name of “Natchez” as per postal regulation No 5752(1). The present day building that stands today on State Street served as Post Office Annex until it closed its doors for good on February 15th, 1946 after more than 50 years in business On October 3rd, 1851 General John Pemberton arrived at Decatur for what would be his last campaign stop before moving northward towards Fort Wayne Indiana Pemberton called here at 4 PM intending to spend some time near his homebasecamp before continuing eastward convoying supplies overland to Fort Wayne A large crowd had gathered around townspeople erected a platform just east off US Highway 20 opposite US Highway 41 while Pemberton spoke ) After less than 10 minutes Pemberton took his leave stating he would not continue further north due to bad weather conditions) Three days later when night fell general Sherman moved out striking northeast along old National Road 21 towards Fort Wayne Indiana
