Decatur is a city located in the central Illinois region of the United States. The city was founded on December 12, 1824, by General James K. Polk and his Expedition to Expand the United States, which arrived in Decatur on November 15, 1824. The city center was platted in 1830 and named after General James K. Polk's birthplace, Decatur County (now DeKalb County). The first white settlers in what is now Decatur were two families from Ohio who came overland from Kentucky in October 1829. They named their new home "Emmonsburgh" after one of their family members, Elijah Emmons. John White started farming there in 1830 and built the first cabin west of Stonington Lake on what is now Indianola Road. By 1832, White had erected a log cabin with three rooms and a fireplace at what is now First Street and Third Avenue. He also built a post office at this location on October 1, 1830. In that year George Stephenson constructed the Sanitary Railroad between Stonington Lake and Chicago which connected these small settlements; however, it did not reach Decatur until 1840 when it was extended to Three Forks (now Youngstown) along with other lines eventually becoming known as the Keystone System." In 1836 Mormon missionaries arrived in Indiana Territory (later Utah), preaching Christianity to Native American populations; they found support here among prosperous farmers who welcomed them into their homes as converts rather than marooned warriors or refugees like many others around them during that time. One such convert was Joseph Smith Jr., founder of Mormonism; he used his connections to help get land for settlement near Emmonsburgh Creek about six miles north of present-day Decatur Boulevard/I-235 southbound exit ramp off I- 235 eastbound lanes near Marshall Road junction where today you can find several businesses including Hardee's fast food restaurant open since 1978 along with Shell gas station opened 1935 across from Itasca quarry closed 1979 forming an interchange called "Masonic Temple Parkway". With so much interest shown by Mormons throughout this era for land east of Salt Lake City due to its potential mineral resources - especially coal - several groups met together on November 3rd,1837 under charter signed by President David Whitmer to purchase 640 acres just northwest of present day downtown Decatur from Major Samuel Morse for $5200 total as part of efforts led by Governor Levi Moulton Marcy related to Manifest Destiny movement dreaming of extending US control westward into Mexico through Central Americavia various channels including final passage of Manifest Destiny Act by Congress on July 14th [1840]. This area would become known as Marquette Prairie where more than seventy years later industrial production took hold while job opportunities remained limited primarily due mainly to lack of transportation infrastructure nearby making abundance difficult if not impossible find employment outside town limits few exceptions being men working underground coal mines most prevalent industry then jobs available local blacksmiths repairing machinery manufacturing goods mostly textiles shoes printing materials groceries etc…. Today you can see evidence left behind over eighty years ago including abandoned residences churches mills schools warehouses factories ponds lakes etc… all without any major Intracity Transportation Infrastructure allowing much current development…………………………….. Itasca Quarry National Monument features remnants dating back over 100 years old consisting mainly from quarries within Itasca Township Yorkville Community District northeast side agricultural fairgrounds northwest corner lot 516 southeast rural road intersection
