In 1951, the first television station in Decatur aired programming from Chicago on a channel 2 transmitter located near Northwestern Avenue and Illinois Street. Decatur, Illinois is a small town located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. As of the 2010 census, its population was 382. The community was founded by General John Brown in 1827 and has been home to many famous people including Abraham Lincoln and Julius Caesar. The Decatur School District covers all of Decatur Township and parts of Addison Township. The village site was first inhabited by Pequot Indians who built their wigwams near what is now downtown Decatur on the banks of the Des Plaines River. In 1833, General John Brown with his men occupied what is now downtown Decatur while they besieged Springfield, Illinois from May 17-July 4, 1833. On September 15th, 1830 a treaty was made between the United States and Pequot Indians which ceded all land east of the Mississippi River to them in lieu of goods they had captured during that war. This area included much of present day Decatur Township as well as Addison Township. The original buildings in today's downtown Decatur were constructed soon after this treaty signing at what are now Second and Third Streets NE corner State Street NE (now First Avenue NW). In 1836 Captain James Ketchum established a fur trading post at what is now eastern edge of town on the south bank of the Des Plaines River opposite present day North High Street SE (now North Fourth street). He named it Fort Dearborn due to his victory over Gen Christopher DeKalb at Fort Dearborn (near Chicago) on October 14th, 1835. A post office called Dearborn was established here on January 12th, 1840 by Major George Stephenson with mail service starting February 1st that year service running along Michigan Avenue from Dearborn Heights north to Prairie View A&M University & Western Union Telegraph Station at Winona Lake before terminating at South Chicago Terminal where passengers would change cars for trips downstate to Quincy or other points westward From December 1st through April 30th each year there were three shipments per week totaling 375 pounds total worth $1,812 received by Dearborn Post Office from various merchants in northern Illinois including 108 pounds sent via boat from Holland Lakes aboard "Anaconda" arriving November 24th 1840 . These shipments included items such as flour, breads etc., used especially for subsistence purposes during difficult times when supplies were limited . In 1861 an new depot was built adjacent to pioneer schoolhouse which served as a storage shed for military equipment being imported into Southern Illinois for use against Northern armies under Ulysses S Grant . It burned down in 1865 but partially reconstructed near current location An Interesting Incident occurred during World War II when two Japanese Naval vessels stopped off shore about 20 miles southeast entranceof Kaneohe Bay Kaiwi Ocean Beach Village Hawaii on Sunday Evening March 7 1945 while anchored offshore wharfage Favorite son Ltc Jg Cmdr Halsey USN Commander Hawaiian Islands commented "What kind Of place is this?"
