The population of Decatur peaked at around 80,000 in 1960 but has since declined to around 60,000 today. However, because it is located close to major metropolitan areas such as Chicago and Springfield,Decatur remains an important cultural center for northwestern Illinois. Today, Decatur is home to a variety of attractions including an art museum (the Art Institute), several parksincluding Highland Park which contains one of the largest greenbelts east of St Louis 、Hollywood Casino which offers gambling services 、a baseball team called the White Sox 、a football team called Illinois State University Blues 、and three colleges: DePaul University 、Illinois State University 、and Northwestern College. There are also several restaurants and bars throughout town that serve local cuisine from various regions in northeast Illinois.

Decatur is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Cook County. It was founded on December 7, 1836, by General David Dixon and Colonel Augustus Kelley as Fort Dearborn on the south bank of the Chicago River. The city grew rapidly due to its location near both Chicago and Milwaukee, and it became an important manufacturing center during the 19th century. In 1871, Decatur became a separate municipality, and in 1916 it merged with Rockford to form the present-day Illinois City. The history of Decatur is reflective of its location on two rivers: one flowing northward into Lake Michigan while another flows eastward into the Great Lakes basin. The arrival of Europeans in what is now Decatur occurred through a series of crossings: French explorers established La Salle's trading post at what is now First Street (now Wabash Avenue) in 1779; Dutch fur traders arrived in 1795; American settlers arrived later that year when General David Dixon organized a force to drive out Native Americans from their land around Chicago Heights. Dixon's decision to build a fortification on this site resulted in much hostility from Native Americans who considered it their land and would not allow white men onto their territory without first requisitioning from them goods they produced or taking from them livestock they had grown – items that were valuable for trade with Europe. The fortifications were constructed over open ground for almost two years before finally being completed on November 15, 1836–months after Dixon's inauguration as president of Illinois (he also served as military governor). On December 7, 1836, Dixon made his first governmental visit to present-day Decatur when he traveled there from Chicago accompanied by colonel Augustus Kelley (the future mayor of Chicago), who was then adjutant general for Douglas County (then part of Illinois). They encampment stood just northwest of where First Street meets Wabash Avenue today. The fort was garrisoned by 10 soldiers under captain John Lawler until October 1st when General James Shields took command following Shields' promotion to brigadier general during America's War with Mexico which began July 2nd1837 Shields ordered Lawler relieved pending further instructions Captain James Ferguson took command effective October 1st . At about this time Fort Dearborn was renamed Fort George after Majors Gen Joseph Hooker and Winfield Scott Hancock respectively Commander United States Army Trans-Missouri Expedition One thousand nine hundred fifty five days old
Decatur was founded in 1837 by General David D. Butler, who became the first U.S. Postmaster General and first Mayor of Chicago on November 3, 1837. The city was named for George Decatur, an American general and politician who fought in the Mexican-American War (1846-48).
