Grant as the new commander of all Indians in Kansas Territory west of Mexico City following victory over Santa Anna's army at Buena Vista Creek two months earlier. In 1840–1842, Decatur helped build Fort Dearborn which served as the southern boundary of Chicago until it was moved to Peoria in 1847. After Chicago's incorporation into Illinois on February 14, 1870 (following Freeport annexation), Des Moines Street became one of several streets connecting downtown Chicago with rural areas north and east of town through what is now Park Row Shopping Center and Cicero Avenue east of State Street along Lake Shore Drive near Millennium Park
