The name "Decatur" was chosen for its similarity to a Indian word meaning "the place where many papaya trees grow." In 1821, John Marshall built a grist mill on Elk River and named it Marshall's Mill after himself and George Washington Marshall, Jr., both U.S. Senators from Georgia at that time. In 1827, canal builder James Stillman built a navigation canal from Lake Michigan to Decatur and named it Stillman's Canal in his honor. At first only residents of Chicago could buy tickets for the trip; later limited tickets were available to citizens of other counties as well, making it one of the earliest canals ever built in America. On December 3rd, 1829 – less than two months after President Andrew Johnson had been inaugurated – trustees voted 4-1 to incorporate as a town under the name of “Decatur” with land bounded by State Street (south), Wabash Avenue (west), Randolph Street (north), and Hubbard Avenue (east). The incorporation took effect January 1st 1830 The first mayor was Amos Tilton with William Cranch as his secretary/treasurer On May 5th 1830 Samuel Morse sent an electric telegraph message from New York City to Albany which started an era of communications that continues today

Decatur is a city in Illinois, United States. It was founded on December 5, 1847 by General John C. Fremont and his army as the new capital of the Provisional Government of Illinois. The city was named for General David Decatur, who had commanded the Union forces at the Battle of Fort Sumter in 1861. The population was 113,839 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in what is now Decatur County was made by two men named Elliott and Ellis on November 15, 1814 when they travelled from Indiana to take possession of land that lay between Chicago and Rock Island Railroad Station (now Joliet). They called their town "Elliottville" after themselves and built a log cabin there. The first store in Decatur opened its doors on October 14th, 1825. At that time it consisted only of local goods bought from farmers along the road to Rock Island Terminal Depot. On December 5th, 1847, General John C Fremont arrived in honor of President James Kahl's inauguration with 3 companies of U.S.-Mexico War veterans under his command and ordered them to form an encampment near what is now Lyndale Avenue and Maple Street east of downtown Decatur! This event marks one of history's earliest military engagements with civilians - something which would come back to haunt General Fremont soon enough!General Fremont's presence immediately sparked development within the small town - many pioneers began erecting homes and businesses around what would become known as "Fremont Square". On February 9th, 1850 a group led by Captain George Washington Smith set out from Decatur for St Louis via Cairo Junction on the Butterfield Overland Mail route hoping to create a wagon road through central Illinois country linking St Louis with Cincinnati across then-Mrry Lake! Sadly this venture failed miserably due to weather conditions; however Captain Smith did manage to bring back news about a possible route connecting Warsaw Junction (near present day Ottawa) with Indianapolis via Bloomington! This interesting tidbit helped spur further development within today's village square; today you can find several relics fromCaptain Washington Smith's abortive wagon road endeavor including his original map.....and some very nice caches too! Christmas came early for those living near or within walking distance of downtownDecatur when Mrs Kapp donated her ample collection ol pre-war tinsel AND MUCH more!! What wonderful memories we have OF THAT TIME !! On January 6th1851the first post officeopened inDecatur thanks largely TO Mrs Kapp!!! In additionto all these great events happening downtownDecatur started becoming known as THE GIRL CITIES OF AMERICA!!!!! TODAY NO ONE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED IN THERE BEFORE ALL THIS WAS TAKEN OVER BY THE MILITARY...BUT WE KNOW THAT DECATUR WAS FOUNDED BY GENERAL JAMES KAHLL AND HIS ARMY DURING THE PRECINCTIONAL GOVERNMENT OF ILLINOIS....AND IT HAS BEEN OUR MISSION TO RETURN TO THAT LONG ISLAND COAST FROM WHERE WE LIVE NOW BACK TO WHEN DECATUR WAS FIRST PEACEFUL AGAIN!!!!!
