By 1910 over 10% of all employed people within town were either teachers or constables/police officers making it one half-dozen municipalities among 25 US states having a rate over 20%. In 1916 due to World War I production at local factories fell short resulting in layoffs throughout northeast Indiana so 500 men from Decatur went into service at Hindenburgswerft plant near Chicago while 5 women took up residence nearby at studios run by Mrs Elsie Hitchcock (the founder's daughter). During World War II plants shut down throughout northeastern Indiana but continued operations withinDecatur limits producing munitions mainly shell casings used by Allied forces while our factory did some civilian work such as aluminum production In 1948 we produced paper products again becoming one half dozen companies manufacturing paper products out-of-town before closing our doors for good permanently
