Decatur, Illinois is a small town located in the Macomb County region of Michigan. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing-Warren metropolitan area. Decatur is bordered by Saginaw to the east, Bay City to the north and west, and Battle Creek to the south. The first American settlers in what would become Decatur date back to 1803 when John Jacob Astor founded a fur trading post on Canisteo Island in Lake Huron. The following year, he and his brother Charles sailed from New York with fifteen men and two boats for what would become Decatur County. In 1807, Captain George Stephenson discovered oil wells near present-day Decatur and began extracting crude oil from what would come to be known as Stephenson's Well Field. By 1812, operations were underway atwhat became known as Stevenson's Ferry Landing on Detroit River due south of present day downtown Decatur. In 1827, Augustus Woodward purchased 1/2 acre (0.14 ha) of land off Plymouth Road northeast of today's town center for $1 per lot; this included an adjoining meadow that served as a defense against Indian attacks during the early 1800s. Woodward named his tract "Woodward Township" in honor of Augustus' father-in-law Colonel Elijah Porter Dodge who had donated 2 acres (0.80 ha) adjacent to current day Ford Park in Dearborn Heights for that purpose.). In 1830, Woodward built a log cabin which he called "Dodge House". One year later he replaced it with a more efficient brick structure which still stands today - Tower House (). By 1840, there were seven white families living in Clifford Township: Greenough ( patriarch), Witherspoon (mother), Phelps (father), Beardsley (brother), Ransom (son). One hundred years later only one family still lives there - The Flintstones (). A mill was erected on North Main Street approximately three miles northwest of Downtown Decatur by Solomon Eaton around 1850; this mill processed flour from cornmeal products received through shipments brought upriver via horse carriages called "couriers." Eaton also operated an sawmill on South Main Street which produced lumber until 1862 when it was closed due to competition from larger mills owned by Anderson & Sklar Brothers company.. Coal mining commenced operations here about 1870 but ceased operation about 1915 because anthracite coal was not profitable given its high sulfur content necessitating expensive handling procedures for shipment across state lines.. A large water tower built under Ives Street between Livingston Avenue and First Street NW around 1909 provided irrigation facilities for much of central Michigan including present-day Decataria Township before being shut down about 1945..
