Decatur is a town in Decatur County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first known European to visit what is now Decatur was a French trader named Jacques Marquette in 1804. He explored and charted the present-day riverfront area that includes most of downtown and parts of east side and west side neighborhoods before returning home on July 4, 1805. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson's forces burned down the courthouse in Decatur after arresting several citizens for voting against his presidential election victory over John Quincy Adams. The courthouse building was rebuilt within 10 years, but it again caught on fire in 1851—this time as part of an effort by Governor Daniel Webster to quash any calls for secession from the Union during the American Civil War (1861–1865). In 1865, when Union General Ulysses S. Grant captured Fort Donelson near Nashville Tennessee after a three-month siege and destroyed much of that city's infrastructure including its canals and bridges (a major success for Grant), he ordered all military prisoners brought into town to be put on trial there instead of being sent back to prison at Fort Pulaski outside St Louis County because there were no facilities available suitable for such a large number of menagerie animals; this event is generally considered one of the turning points leading up to America entering World War I (1914–1918). In 1907, Mayor Milt Hennen founded Decatur High School which remains one of Illinois' largest high schools with nearly 4,000 students todaygrades 7 through 12th grade located on two campuses adjacent to each other across street from Municipal Park with more than 1 acre (.4 km2) worth of athletic fields and multiple playgrounds/courses inside Municipal Park as well as several restaurants/bars open throughout the school day seven days per week Year round...The original campus site included just four buildings: Administration Building (now First Baptist Church), Library Annex (later demolished due to lack of use or funding), Practice Fields House (later used by Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company as their law office) and Main Street Grounds; however due to landowner concerns about possible suburban development these buildings were not built until 1922 when Hennen donated additional land across Northwest Second Avenue from City Hall southward which has since become known as "Hennen Place". "Municipal Park" remains one continuous open space composed largely Of Municipal Land bounded by Northwest Second Avenue NW & Main Street NE & Interstate 435 W ; extending further northward along I-435W into adjoining Willard Township

In addition, there were numerous mills and businesses built throughout late Victorian times which contributed significantly to local economic development. However, during World War II many factories closed down in IL because of wartime production restrictions; however, they reopened following 1945 as part of a statewide recovery effort spearheaded by President Harry S Truman. As a result of these efforts over timeDecatur has seen some modest levels of prosperity but also significant investment from both private enterprise and government sources including tax breaks and infrastructure projects such as new roads and bridges across two major rivers
