Decatur is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Decatur was John Stephenson in 1836. He and his family built a log cabin on the east bank of the Kankakee River. By 1840, Stephenson had four children and began to cultivate land around their cabin. In 1845, he married Sarah Peabody and they moved to what is now Decatur from Aurora, Illinois where they had lived before. They started a family and plowed their land until 1860 when they bought 4 acres (1 hectare) of land north of present-day Decatur High School for $2 per acre (0.50 km²). They raised chickens, cows and pigs on this property until 1870 when they began to sell it to settlers for $10 per acre (3 ha). From this start, Decatur became an important center for agricultural production in the region with more than 60 farmers operating 800 acres (30 ha) of farmland by 1900. In 1901, John Stephenson's great grandson Jameson Stephenson donated two tracts of land totaling 68 acres (26 ha) east of present day Decatur High School to make way for a new high school which would become DECATUR COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING INCorporated in 1962. These donations continue to be valuable today as part of DECATUR'S rich history and culture! During World War II, many residents worked at Boeing plants located near Rockford or Joliet; however most residents were out of town during that time period since there were no schools in those areas that offered accredited schooling for students from rural areas like Decatur! In 1946 local resident Donald Ewing opened up his own business called Republic Services which provided goods/services such as home cleaning/repair services; however because there were no businesses available within driving distance that met these needs locals decided to form their own government entity which we know as DECATUR CITY CLERKSHIPS COOPERATIVE LIMITED PARTNERSHIP DIVISION! This organization lasted through several name changes over the years but its legacy remains unchanged today as our current name - DECATUR CITY GOVERNMENT

The city's rich history began with its founding by a group of Methodist missionaries in 1814 as "Natchez". For many years it was one of the most populous cities in Illinois due to its location along the Mississippi River and its financial opportunities derived from being an important transportation center for goods and passengers travelling between New Orleans and Chicago. However, during World War II it experienced significant decline as various industries left town for wartime production elsewhere. However, since 2000s there has been renewed interest in Decatur as a cultural destination and business center due to its diverse attractions including art galleries, music venues and bookstores. The early settlers of what would become Decatur were Methodists who came from North Carolina in 1811 when they founded a religious community called Mount Zion Chapel near present-day Franklin Park on the banks of the Mississippi River just south of downtown (now within walking distance of both). They named their new settlement after Fort Worth (then Texas) where they had been living while missionary work continued outside Texas. The fortifications around Fort Worth prevented any hostile Indian attacks so that by 1840 all other aspects of life withinDecatur were under Christian auspices too: school children learned reading and writing in English because that was then considered good character traits; men worked on plantations nearby until 1862 when they joined Union armies fighting against Confederate forces during the American Civil War; women took care of home economics such as sewing clothes etc., until 1920s when they became eligible for voting rights which led to increased political power among women throughout America; thanks also to railroadroads connecting this area with larger markets – especially Chicago –Decatur gradually grew into one of Illinois' most prosperous cities over time although slower than some other major settlements such as Urbana or Champaign-Urbana which experienced more rapid growth due largely to natural resources exploited by those same businesses (such as agriculture). On December 1, 1814, Decatur was chartered as a town by the Illinois General Assembly. It became a part of the new United States in 1819. The city was named after Judge George Washington Decatur.
