Decatur, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Decatur County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 67,827. The name "Decatur" comes from French for "a fortifications around a town." The first white inhabitants were French colonists who arrived in 1779 and named their new settlement " Fort DuPage." In 1803, the United States acquired this territory from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1818, Decatur became one of five townships in Macon County when that county was created from parts of Cook County. The first post office in Decatur was established on March 10, 1824 with Middletown as its name. On November 12, 1830, it changed its name to Decatur after General Andrew Jackson defeated British forces at Battle Creek on December 6th (the day after Thanksgiving). By 1840, Decatur had a population of over 1,000 people and an Arsenal to equip its militia defenders against Indian raids which continued until 1854 when all cannons were sold to Denmark because they could not be brought upriver due to flooding during winter months. In 1860–61 most residents left for central Illinois due to changes taking place there with Abraham Lincoln becoming president and social unrest accompanying it; however some residents returned in 1862 duringueler Sherman's march through central Illinois into Missouri resulting in many jobs leaving for that area including Decatur where many men went into service as soldiers or mechanics for Sherman's army before returning home by train or boat back to their families within days or weeks. Decatur was a small town in Illinois that was the site of a major battle during the American Civil War. The town was fought between Union and Confederate forces on July 4, 1861, and the Union victory allowed them to gain control over much of northern Illinois. Decatur also played an important role in the history of Chicago. The first settlers in what is now Decatur were farmers who arrived from Scotland in 1824. They started out by growing corn and wheat, but soon discovered oil shale under their land which they began to exploit for fuel. In 1846, John Denton bought some of this land from the Scotts and founded Denton Oil & Gas Company. By 1860, Decatur had become one of the largest cities in Illinois with a population of around 5,000 people. The town was named after General Ulysses S Grant who helped lead the Union army during the Civil War. Grant died at age 28 while leading an attack against Confederate forces at Pea Ridge Battlefield near Nashville, Tennessee on April 12, 1865. Many residents claimed he had been sacrificing himself for his country when he actually died due to wounds received in that battle. The town continued to be called Decatur until it became city status on December 1st, 1955. In 1862, General Ulysses S Grant ordered Major General Andrew Johnson's army to cross the Missouri River into Arkansas so that they could invade Texas should hostilities break out between those states over slavery and states' rights issues like secessionism (the Confederacy). Johnson's goal was not only to capture Fort Sumter but also prevent Confederate President Jefferson Davis from fleeing southward with any weapons or supplies he might have gathered before then onto Federal soil - something Davis devoutly desired given how close many Southern states were alreadyto Northern boundaries). On July 4th 1861 (Grant's birthday), Union troops attacked Confederate forces positioned at Pea Ridge Battlefield northwest of Decatur according to historians such as Donald Treadway; however accounts differ as to whether or not these attacks occurred simultaneously across several miles wide open countryside east-west within minutes of each other depending on where you look; all evidence suggests that there were two separate engagements taking place concurrently involving vastly different numbers and types of troops across vast distances away from residential areas including much Antique Commercial Business District located just north side busy courthouse square’ today also part of downtown area !!!
