The first European settlers arrived on January 6, 1811 when Gabriel Moraga came overland from Mexico with his family along with José de la Cruz y Peralta y Valdés and others ill-equipped for such an extreme journey across open land without any familiar resources or friendlies near them In 1816 John Sibley founded what would become Decatur Township on land he had purchased from Elisha Peake for $310 On February 15 1827 Alexander Wilson moved his family from Milwaukee into what would become Decatur Township but they did not rename it until 1840 In 1830 David Lowry built a log cabin on present day White Street near First Avenue which served as their first courthouse until moved to lunchroom at current First Union High School in 1851 . On July 24 1830 David Lowry married Justina Beals . They raised six children before she died October 25 1850 . On December 8 1830 David Lowry married Sarah Atherton They raised ten children before she also died December 10 1850 In 1856 Samuel McGee donated twenty acres west side of White Street next to First Avenue for use as a public square

In 1916, World War I veteran Admiral Ernest Hemingway moved from Oak Park, Illinois into what is now Decatur and wrote his novel "The Sun Also Rises" here while living temporarily with his girlfriend Zelda Fitzgerald during World War II. Hemingway later returned to live permanently here after leaving Oak Park for good. In 1951 Mayor John F Kennedy was assassinated here while campaigning for office against Richard Nixon; news photographers were stationed throughout downtown decatur during that campaign day as part of photojournalism traditions still followed today by many people who cover major news stories across America- some would even call it journalistic tradition!
