In the early 1800s, Decatur was a small town in Illinois. It was home to a gunsmith named John Brown who made pistols and rifles. His shop was located on Main Street, just north of the Chicago River. In 1851, Brown opened a store adjoining his shop and began selling firearms t-shirts. The shirts were designed to promote gun ownership and safety. Polk's ambassador to Russia; they resided here until their move to Washington D .C . during World War II when they joined others from central Illinois who relocated to Arlington Cemetery near Washington D .C . After World War II many residents decided that living close to major economic centers was no longer feasible or desirable so much shopping and commuting had taken place within driving distance that it began resembling small town life more than big city living As one might expect given its size – it has an unemployment rate well below average for all states – there are few blighted neighborhoods like those found in large cities where high rates PredateUrban Development ordinances were instituted which discouraged Developers from building single-family homes on dense residential areas because these homes would compete with commercial businesses which caused rents prices for apartments and condos to skyrocket while creating crime problems On December 10th 1886 Abraham Lincoln visited Decatur while attending a public meeting held at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Mound Street; he spoke about how "the progress made since I have beenPresident has been without parallel under our system" A new courthouse was built between 1907-10 by local architect Edward Logue for $4 million dollars using funds received as part of legislation passed by Congress following World War I known as the Clayton Act When railroads came through town passenger trains stopped running at Fulton Station making transportation difficult unless you took bus #1 which ran out into Fulton County then walked 5 minutes down Market Street into town where you could catch another bus out into Fulton County

Decatur, Illinois is a city in Decatur County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,869 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Decatur County. The city is located on the north side of Chicago and is bordered by Park Ridge to the south and Westchester to the west. The first permanent settler in what would become Decatur was John Stephenson in 1824. He purchased two sections of land from Captain Samuel Laclede for $2 per acre. Stephenson named his community after General George Washington's home state of Virginia, Dogue Creek Station being his choice for its name because it sounded like "Dogue" but with an "i". By 1830, Stephenson had developed a busy trading post and store at what became known as "Promontory Point". In 1834 he sold his land to Ethan Allen who built a house there that still stands today. In 1839 Ethan Allen sold another piece of land to Alexander Macomb which would become part of Chicago later that year. This purchase also doubled as Macombs' initial headquarters for operations in what would become Chicago. When Chicago was founded as a town in 1835, Decatur became its first incorporated village and remained so until 1905 when it merged with Lakeview into one municipality In 1850 Reva Hale bought 1/4 mile (0 kilometer) east of Stephenson's original site from him for $10 per acre (0¢ per foot). She named her new settlement after her late father-in-law Moses Hale who had been killed during the American Civil War while serving under General Ulysses S Grant In 1861 Elijah Hickson bought 3/4 mile (1 kilometer) east of Reva Hale's holdings from her for $40 per acre (1¢ per foot). Hickson renamed his new settlement after Confederate general Pemberton Tucker who had been killed during the American Civil War while commanding Union troops near Richmond A post office called Decatur was established at Hickson's site on July 7, 1861; it operated until December 14th 1865 when it closed due to lack of mail volume After leaving Nauvoo he made several trips downriver before finally settling in this area where he died on September 12th 1880 . His wife Esther used some of their savings from their Great Lakes trip to build them a small cabin hereabouts . One can still find evidence left by Esther including white oak boards found nailed together along one edgeof their cabin . The town Millenia replaced this building about 1984-1986 which has served as the local public library ever since

Decatur was founded in 1834 by Captain George Decatur as the capital of Illinois Territory. The city was named for General James K. Polk, who served as the 25th president of the United States from 1844 to 1849. In 1860, after the American Civil War, Decatur became a part of the new Confederate States of America. The city lost its status as a capital following Union victory in 1865 and reverted back to its original name of Decatur until it was renamed Chicago in 1903.
