The first people to live in what is now Decatur were sachem (chief) tomahawks from the Ottawa Nation. In 1814, General James Clark's army invaded Indian Territory and destroyed many villages, including those of the Ottawa Nation. A group of settlers led by John Sorey founded a small town on the site of today's Decatur on April 12, 1817. They named it after General James Clark's headquarters in Springfield, Missouri. In 1824, a group of white men and women led by Abraham Lincoln purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) south of present day Decatur for $2 per acre ($25 per lot). This land became known as "Lincoln Park". Adams Township was organized around this same time and still includes part of Lincoln Park today. On January 1, 1836 – one year after Illinois became a state – Decatur became an incorporated town with 9 residents. On November 3rd that year, President Andrew Johnson signed into law United States Code Section 10a which abolished slavery throughout all United States except for cases where adults or children could be bought or sold as slaves through special purchase laws enacted by each state; this included Illinois specifically! The sale took place off-site at Fort Dearborn because there wasn't enough space available on Chicago's North Side for all these buyers! This event helped spur businesses such as Galesburg Brewery to move their operations to Decatur so they could tap into this new market opportunities! During World War II much activity took place here due to munitions production; most notably at nearby Wernher von Braun’s rocket factory which manufactured missiles used during WWII! After war ended things slowed down again although some factories did remain active until 1973 when they closed completely due to advancements in technology!
