A new theater was built in 1907 and named after Jens Jensen who gave much of his money for this project In 1865 when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Washington D.C., riots broke out throughout America due to his death; however no such riots took place in Decatur because there had been no president killed since Ulysses S Grant died during an accidental shooting two years earlier The first post office in Decatur opened on November 3rd 1870 with three mail carriers serving only six residents In 1893 a railroad line between Chicago and St Louis crossed through Decatur giving rise to a large number of shipments coming into town Construction began on the original Loyola University campus located east of downtown on now known as Roosevelt Road just south of I-670) but it never came to completion The last major building constructed within the city limits before its annexation by Carbondale were some additions to Northwestern Memorial Hospital which opened in 1954 In 1957 Carbondale annexed portions ofDecatur Heights making it possible for Carbondale Mayor Harry Bailey to plan a master development that would include both high schools and retail stores along Roosevelt Road
