Decatur is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 51,636 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Decatur County. The city was founded in 1837 by General James Wilkinson and laid out by him on the east side of what is now Decatur Road. It became an important railroad center and manufacturing center during the 19th century. In 1920, it annexed part of Streator Township. The first white settler in what is now Decatur was John Edwards in 1837. He built a cabin on the site where he now lives and operations began as a fur-trading post known as "Edwardsville." A few years later, General James Wilkinson arrived with his army to fight against Mexico and discovered land on which he could build a new town - Decatur. Wilkinson named his new settlement after himself, which means "city of God's chosen people." This early community thrived for some time but eventually succumbed to overcrowding and economic decline due to lack of industry or transportation options within reach for most residents. In 1920, when Commerce City had eclipsed Decatur as the dominant industrial center in Cook County, Mayor George Browne petitioned for its annexation into Decatur because he felt that it would give more assistance to fledgling businesses within our city limits than would be possible from farther away. The result was an agreement between Browne and then-mayor Edward Dooley that allowed for the annexation of much of neighboring Streator Township under one common name -Decaturia! Although not without controversy (Streator residents boycotted Annexation Day), this event signaled an era of growth and progress for both cities – beginning with DECATUR 2020! Today,Decatur continues to experience significant growth thanks to its strong economy and vibrant community spirit; however, there are still many challenges facing our city including: high housing prices; limited access to quality public transportation; limited job opportunities; low levels of educational attainment among decatursians; disparities in wealth distribution across racial lines; persistent poverty – particularly amongst minority groups – allwithstanding DECATUR 2020’s successes! There has always been movement throughout Cook County towards incorporating villages into larger communities due largely to concerns about rural depopulation (a problem exacerbated by travel distance) as well as concerns over duplication/centralization of services within smaller towns or villages becoming increasingly difficult or impossible to maintain given their current size & complexity relative to surrounding municipalities (& even other counties!). In response thereto numerous committees have been created over time specifically addressing village incorporation issues (e.g., since 1980 “Village incorporations Committee”), while others have tried less overtly (e.g., occasional resolutions / petitions filed with various county boards). Our goal has always been twofold: 1) To provide Assembling Committees with feedback related directly TO Village Issues so they can better understand HOW we can improve things FOR Villages (& NOT just AGAIN ABOUT INDUSTRIAL CITIES!), & 2) To Encourage & support official efforts underway BY ANY COUNTY GOVERNMENT TO INJURE OR DEPRIVE VILLAGES FROM THEIR AUTHORITY…. In any case though opinions will continue TO vary about whether or not village incorporation should be re-examined given current trends………..DECATUR 2020 finally seems like a good opportunity…..we need someone who really cares aboutvillages

Decatur was founded in 1814 by General David Hull and Captain Nicholas Cody. The town was named after General Hull's ancestral home, Decatur House. The first settler in Decatur was John Sibley, who established a farm on the east side of the river in 1818. In 1830, Dr. George Hinkle moved from Indiana to what is now Decatur and began practicing medicine there. He also donated land for a school and other public buildings. The population of Decatur increased rapidly during the 1830s due to immigration from Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Poland and Sweden. In 1839, General Hull sold his interest in the town to John Pemberton for $10 thousand dollars. Pemberton served as mayor from 1840-1843 and 1845-1848; he also served as alderman from 1840-1842 and 1850-1855. During this time period (1839-1853), many important events occurred in Decatur including: The first railroad station was built in 1841 on the site of present day Post Office Square; In 1852, the Illinois Central Railroad arrived in Decatur with its line running north–south through town; In 1865, Judge Augustus Bledsoe became one of America's first judges when he took office as an associate justice on the Illinois Supreme Court; In 1870, Rev. Rufus King set up a mission church near where First Baptist Church now stands; In 1893–94 construction began on Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School which opened in 1895 (now known as Historic Park – Stritch School District #5); On January 1st 1880chievementwasmadeofa Record Decisionbythe Third Circuit Judicial Circuit Court granting Institutional Separation between African Americans Male Freeholders of Cook County under Order No.: 5648/79 for Whites Only within Township limits only subject to such regulations as may be prescribed by Township Board thereof … these changes brought about great changes throughout Cook County not just inside township limits but also beyond township limits into neighboring counties.
