Darien, Illinois was founded in 1812 by Joshua Darien and his friend John Stephenson. Darien is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Elgin metropolitan area. The name Darien comes from First Nations people who lived and hunted there in the 1800s and early 1900s. The first settlers in what would become Darien were white men from New York City named Nicholas Nearing and his brother-in-law George Hennepin. They arrived on July 4, 1827, on a ship called "Eagle". This was one of the earliest settlements in McHenry County. The brothers founded a small community called Easton about two miles east of present day Darien. Nicholas Nearing served as its first postmaster and built the first store there in 1828. He also developed mills along the Fox River to produce flour for local markets. In 1830, Daniel Trumbull came to Darien from Quincy, Massachusetts with his family to start an agricultural farm that would eventually grow into Trumbull's enterprises including Trumbull's Mill (1901), which still stands today and produces flour for local markets;trading posts such as Nearing's Store (1830) which operated out of a barn on the current site of Union Pacific Railroad tracks across fromTrumbull’s Farm;and Northrop House (1835), now known as Northrop Grumman Headquarters Campus Tower located on Wacker Drive adjacent to Northwestern University Law School/Chicago Booth School Of Business Administration/ Henry Jaffe Center for Entrepreneurship
