In 1855, a group of men from Darien, Illinois, founded the first target shooting society in the United States. The Society used salvaged gun barrels to make their own targets and held meetings at various locations until 1861. In that year, the Union Army burned down the original society's building, leaving only several wooden target holders remaining. The Society began using new Target Holder Company targets in 1865. Eventually, they purchased a larger factory and produced targets for both indoor and outdoor use. From 1903-1910, they also made target cups which could be filled with lead or powder to shoot at paper targets. In 1937-1938, they produced an improved version of their cups which became known as "The Perfect Cup". The company continued producingTarget Holders until it ceased operations in 1975

Carpenters, doctors, farmers and other businesses started up around this time as well; this helped contribute to Darien's growing importance as a community center over time. By 1970, however, internet access had become available here so that businesses could start marketing their products online much earlier than they would have otherwise done.
