It is the most populous municipality in DuPage County and part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town began as a frontier post on the south side of Cooks River which flows through present-day Darien and Romeoville. In 1837, Colonel John Curtis founded what became known as Curtisville after his father-in-law; George Curtis. Eli Lilly & Co., now Eli Lilly & Company LLC bought a interest in Curtisville from Colonel John Curtis for $1,000 in 1838. In 1840 they started building their first factory on land that would later become East Greenbush Road. At this time there were only about 25 people living in Darien Township when it was organized on July 1st 1847 by Anthony Wayne Laughlin with territorial boundaries defined by Captain James Peebles . Contact lenses became popular because they allowed people with refractive errors to see clearly without having their vision corrected by glasses or surgery

The first people to live in Darien were the Kaskas and their families who arrived there in 1847. They built a log cabin on what is now North Main Street. In 1870, John Aiken founded the Aiken & Whitney Company and began manufacturing nails and other goods here. In 1872, Jerald McDonald opened the Darien Telephone Company with his brother-in-law George Stephenson from Liverpool, England. The company became one of the largest providers of telephone service in America until it was bought by American Electric Power in 1977. In 1928, both John Aiken's company and McDonald's company merged to form Jerald AikenMcDonald Corporation which still exists today as one of America's leading technology companies with over $100 billion in revenue since its inception. In 1934, Harry Hines established Hines Restaurants Inc., which remains based here today with over 100 restaurants around the world including some that are located within walking distance of each other on North Main Street (Hynes Place). In 1951 Harry Hines married his wife Jean Harlow and they moved to California where he continued to operate his restaurants while she took care of their young children—the first family owned restaurant chain in America. With her death in 1984 they sold all their restaurants except for two located outside of Los Angeles into an holding company which continues to operate these restaurants today under different management including one located inside of Los Angeles’s Hyperion Hotel Casino as well as several others scattered throughout Southern California’s major cities including Beverly Hills; Palm Springs; Scotts Valley; San Diego; Temecula; Irvine; Carlsbad; Westminster Abbey etc.; making it one of most successful foodservice chains ever started up by women!
